More 2012 Doncaster Mile Scratchings – Rekindled Interest & Single Out

The wet weather in Sydney ahead of Saturday’s prestigious Doncaster Mile 2012 has claimed its first casualties with the connections of both Rekindled Interest and Single withdrawing their horses from the race.

Rekindled Interest

Rekindled Interest has been scratched from the 2012 Doncaster Mile field due to the heavy track

There are now officially three scratchings from the $2 million Group 1 BMW Doncaster Mile (1600m), running as Royal Randwick Race 7 on Saturday, with Peter Moody’s top mare King’s Rose also withdrawing.

As reported by earlier today King’s Rose will bypass the Doncaster after receiving an invite to the Group 1 Champions Mile at Sha Tin on May 6 from the Hong Kong Jockey Club.

Her scratching has paved the way for former AJC Oaks winner Absolutely, a mudlark and market mover into $26 in the latest Doncaster markets, to be ridden by ace hoop Luke Nolen on Saturday.

The news of the Jim Conlan-trained Rekindled Interest withdrawing came as little surprise with Conlan saying since acceptance stage that if the track remained in the Heavy range he would not run the last-start George Ryder Stakes runner-up.

Rekindled Interest, who was drawn in barrier two and rated around $16 in the Doncaster Mile odds at, will instead go up against the likes of Americain, Australian Cup – Ranvet Stakes – The BMW triple winner Manighar and Jimmy Choux in the $500,000 Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m) on Sydney Cup Day Saturday week.

Craig Carmody’s High Chaparral four-year-old Single earned a Doncaster start after their gritty win in the Listed Sky High Stakes (1900m) at Rosehill last time out, but won’t get their chance in a Group 1 after injuring their off-hind leg.

The current Doncaster Mile field is now down to 19 hopefuls both emergencies in the Paul Beshara-trained Happy Trails and Kevin Moses’ All Legal now in the starting line-up.

Happy Trails ($41) comes off a good fourth behind fellow Doncaster rival Fast Clip ($31) in last Saturday’s Doncaster Prelude and will be ridden by Jay Ford.

Local Al Maher five-year-old All Legal meanwhile is the $101 roughie of the field after their Doncaster Prelude seventh, Kathy O’Hara engaged for the ride.

The early scratchings have also affected the latest Doncaster Mile odds with Epsom Handicap winner Secret Admirer now the sole $6 favourite over possibly next-to-withdraw More Joyous on $6.50.

Money has come in for Chris Waller’s Chipping Norton Stakes winner Shoot Out too and they are into $7.50 over the Stephen Farley-trained Sincero ($8).

A dual Group 1 winner, Umatilla four-year-old Sincero was last seen finishing just half a length away fifth in the George Ryder.

Farley rates them as a top chance in the wet on Saturday as they won the 2011 Gosford Guineas on a Heavy (10) track at their only rain-affected run to date.

“His run in the George Ryder showed he deserves his shot at a Doncaster,” Farley said.

“When I made the decision my immediate reaction was I want a good or a heavy track and it looks like I’ll get my wish.

“He’s probably had a few excuses along the way but his record says he wants it firm or very wet.

“I know the field on Saturday is a lot different to the Gosford Guineas field he beat on the heavy but he couldn’t have handled that surface any better so going to the races on Saturday I won’t be disappointed if it’s a heavy (10).”
