Promising three-year-old Hot Snitzel will be out to build on an already impressive resume when she lines up in a full 14-horse field in the Group 1 2012 Galaxy (1100m) at Randwick on Saturday.
Currently paying $13.00 to take out the feature sprint, the Gerald Ryan-trained gelding has been in solid form in 2012, beating Manawanui to win the Royal Sovereign Stakes before running fifth in the Hobartville Stakes.
Triple Crown Syndications Racing Manager Chris Ward said he is ready to take on older, more experienced horses for the first time this weekend.
“We know he performs particularly well fresh. Gerald (Ryan) has freshened him right up and says he is working tremendous,” Ward said.
The two-time Group 2 winner is chasing a first ever Group 1 victory this weekend in a race that he has been targeted for ever since the Hobartville Stakes fifth.
“Essentially The Galaxy has been the first option the whole way through since his last race,” Ward said.
“I think he should be very competitive.”
If the son of Snitzel can produce an upset victory on Saturday, he will we have to do so on a wet track with the Randwick surface currently rated a heavy 9 and unlikely to improve too much by the weekend.
Ward said Gerald Ryan would prefer a dry track for the young gelding but suggested the conditions would not worry him.
“There are no concerns at all from us regarding the heavy going,” Ward said.
On the gelding’s side this weekend is experienced jockey Hugh Bowman who will ride Hot Snitzel from barrier 15.
To take top honours he will have to beat some quality sprinters including fellow three-year-old Nobby Snip who has been in excellent form.
The Gai Waterhouse gelding is chasing a fourth consecutive victory and his first at the elite level after impressing in lower quality races so far this year.
He is second favourite ($6.00) behind Jason Warren-trained gelding Bel Sprinter ($5.00) who is fresh off a fourth-place finish in the Challenge Stakes after being scratched from the Newmarket earlier this year.
