Buffering on Track for 2012 Doomben 10000

Highly rated Brisbane sprinter Buffering is in good shape heading into his winter Brisbane campaign that will begin with a defence of the Group 2 2012 Victory Stakes on April 28.

Buffering is on track for a big Brisbane Carnival

The Robert Heathcote-trained four-year-old is being targeted for the Group 1 2012 BTC Cup (1200m) and Doomben 10000 and he is on-song to return in good shape after impressing in a 1000-metre trial yesterday.

“The track was wetter than I expected but I was very pleased with his work,” Heathcote said.

“He’s coming along well and is on target to defend his title in the Victory Stakes.”

Yet to record a Group 1 victory, the gelding came close on three consecutive occasions in elite-level sprint races in Melbourne.

He ran third to Black Caviar in the Lightning Stakes before losing by a head to Hay List in the prestigious Newmarket Handicap and again finished third in the William Reid Stakes.

He kicked off last year’s winter campaign with a dominant win in the Victory Stakes and Heathcote is confident he will be ready to again produce the goods in the Group 2 race.

“I gave him a short break following his last run in the William Reid in Melbourne and he’ll have a solid gallop next Tuesday which should top him off nicely for his return in the Victory Stakes,” Heathcote said.

He will then go on to contest the BTC Cup on May 12 before attempting to win the $650,000 Doomben 10000 a fortnight later.

Buffering showed plenty of promise when running third to Black Caviar and Hay List in the BTC Cup last year but could not back it up in the Doomben 1000, finishing a disappointing seventh.

Following a strong Melbourne campaign and a decent preparation, the son of Mossman stands in a good position to produce an improved showing in his home state this year.

Buffering has eight career wins from 23 starts and has collected more than $1.2 million in prize money.

The Brisbane carnival is not too far away but for the moment there is still plenty of racing in Sydney and this Saturday’s Doncaster Mile market is now open at bookmaker.com.au.
