Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
With all of the attention on mighty mares More Joyous and Secret Admirer for Saturday’s Doncaster Mile 2012 it seems the bookies and punters have forgotten about Jim Conlan’s multiple Group performer Rekindled Interest.
Coming off a devastatingly close second to injured Doncaster withdrawal Metal Bender in the Geore Ryder Stakes (1500m), four-year-old Redoute’s Choice gelding Rekindled Interest is preparing to line up in their sixth Group 1 assignment when they take on a top class field in the $2 million Doncaster Mile (1600m) at Royal Randwick on the weekend.
Drawn close to the fence in barrier two in the 20 starter plus two emergency Doncaster Mile field, Rekindled Interest will be ridden by regular hoop Dwayne Dunn.
The pair are going to have to be careful on the inside on Saturday with Randwick having been downgraded to a Heavy (8) on Wednesday morning with more rain and another possible downgrade to come.
This countered with the fact the track will be well and truly choppy come Race 7 at 3:35pm on Saturday means the punters have been leaning towards Doncaster hopes drawn out wider including the $6 equal favourites in the latest bookmaker.com.au markets More Joyous (barrier 12) and Secret Admirer (barrier 22).
Last year’s Cox Plate – Mackinnon Stakes third placegetter Rekindled Interest meanwhile pays a more generous $16 in the Doncaster Mile betting markets.
They go to the 1600-metres for the first time since their good win in the Group 2 Dato’ Tan Chin Nam Stakes at Moonee Valley last September, and it has been awhile since Rekindled Interest raced on a rain-affected track as well, their most recent effort a distant fifth when beaten over 12 lengths on a Slow (6) Flemington course for the 2010 Victoria Derby.
Rekindled Interest showed they had come through the George Ryder run well when they ran down stablemate Larry’s Never Late in a 1200-metre jump-out at Randwick yesterday, their final 200-metre sectional run in the same time as Secret Admirer – 11 seconds.
“It was excellent work,” Conlon said.
“It (the Doncaster) has been his major autumn aim and he’s just perfect.
“His work was the equivalent that he did on the Tuesday before the Cox Plate (in the spring).
“That work was winning work and he was probably unlucky not to win the Cox Plate.”
While hopeful of a start and a good show, Mornington-based Conlan has said that if the track was too wet on Saturday that Rekindled Interest would be saved for the $500,000 Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m) on Sydney Cup Day Saturday week.
