Driefontein the horse to beat – 2012 Keith Mackay Quality Field

While most of Gai Waterhouse’s Golden Slipper contingent will still be having a well-earned rest this weekend, Driefontein is expected to turn out as a short-priced favourite in the 2012 Keith Mackay Quality at Sydney’s Royal Randwick Racecourse.

Driefontein is the one to beat in the Keith Mackay Quality this weekend

Markets will not be released until later in the week for the $100,000 Listed sprint (1200m) but the Golden Slipper runner has far and away the best record of the 10-horses that were today named in the final field.

Prior to her Golden Slipper sixth-placing, which was won by fellow Waterhouse horse Pierro, Driefontein had proved unbeatable in four previous starts.

The Fastnet Rock filly won her first ever Group level race in the BJ McLachlan Stakes at Doomben last December before going on to claim top honours in the high profile Magic Millions Classic on the Gold Coast.

Bought for $75,000 in the 2011 Magic Millions Yearling Sale, the two-year-old has more than paid back her price tag having already collected more than $1.3 million in prize money.

She will be forced to carry a huge top weight of 60.5kg into Saturday’s fillies only event, with the next heaviest Agueda and Meidung to carry four kilograms less (56.5kg).

Anthony Cummings-trained Agueda is fresh off a runner-up finish in the Kindergarten Stakes and stands as the most likely challenger to Driefontein.

A daughter of General Nediym, she has one victory and four placings from six starts but will have to overcome an outside barrier draw (10) to claim top honours on Saturday.

Meidung also comes into the race in reasonable form, having finished third to Samaready in the Group 2 Reisling Stakes and has a far better barrier draw than Agueda.

She will run from barrier five with Kerrin McEvoy on board and will be looking to produce the sort of form that saw her win by three lengths in the Harvey Norman Handicap on debut last October.

Also let to line up in the Keith Mackay Quality are debut winner Medusa’s Miss and New Zealand filly Single Style who is fresh off a dominant victory at Warwick Farm last start.
