Plenty of Quality Included in 2012 Gosford Guineas Nominations

While all the talk in the racing community this week has been about Doncaster Day at Randwick, there is still plenty of quality racing elsewhere this weekend including Sunday’s $250,000 2012 Gosford Guineas.

A total of 36 entries were received this morning for the Listed 1200 metre sprint which has a final field limit of 16 horses.

It will be interesting to see who is named in the final field tomorrow, with many of the horses dual nominated for events at Randwick this Saturday.

One horse that has been confirmed as a starter is Kris Lees-trained colt Uate who will contest a series of lucrative provincial Guineas events with the Hawkesbury and Scone Guineas to follow Sunday’s race.

The highly promising three-year-old returned impressively with a runner-up finish in the Maurice McCarten Stakes in late March after a troubled spring campaign.

Uate had plenty in the racing world talking last autumn when he burst on to the scene with three straight victories before running second to Helmet in the Group 1 Sires’ Produce Stakes.

He will come up against consistent filly Hallowell Belle who has been confirmed by leading trainer Gai Waterhouse as a starter in the event.

The Starcraft filly has won twice and placed ten times from 13 starts but has been particularly impressive so far in 2012.

She began the year with consecutive placings in the Group 2 Light Fingers Stakes and Surround Stakes before taking victory in the Darby Munro Stakes.

Her potential was well and truly signalled last weekend when she finished third in the Group 1 TJ Smith Stakes in a high quality field that included Sydney sprinter Rain Affair and star colt Foxwedge.

Another in-form Waterhouse-trained horse nominated for the Gosford Guineas is Nobby Snip who is chasing a fourth consecutive victory.

Whether or not the gelding lines up is yet to be decided as he is also nominated for the Group 1 Galaxy at Randwick on Saturday.

He has five wins from seven starts and was particularly impressive last start in the Eskimo Price Stakes where he defeated Doncaster fancy Niagara.

He is one of a host of horses dual nominated for the Galaxy and the Gosford Guineas including Hot Snitzel, African Pulse and Satin Shoes.
