Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
Despite coming up with the ‘visitor’s draw’ for Saturday’s Royal Randwick headliner, dual Group 1 winning mare and known mudlark Secret Admirer has firmed into top spot in the Doncaster Mile 2012 odds with the wet weather in Sydney working to her advantage.
This year’s $2 million Group 1 Doncaster Mile Handicap (1600m) attracted a full 22-horse field, which includes two emergencies, the Grahame Begg-trained Secret Admirer drawing the widest of the bunch with barrier 22.
It hasn’t stopped the punters coming for the Dubawi four-year-old in the Doncaster Mile betting markets at bookmaker.com.au, however, with Secret Admirer the new $6.50 favourite.
With a likely Slow – Heavy rated Randwick track for Saturday’s clash being wider certainly won’t be a major disadvantage and if there’s one horse that can handle the wet it is Secret Admirer.
Secret Admirer also has an outstanding record at the track and distance having won both the 2010 Flight Stakes and 2011 Epsom Handicap at elite level over the Randwick mile.
“She’s won two Group 1 races both at the Randwick mile so she seems to really relish that so yeah looking forward to Saturday,” Begg said.
“We’re very pleased with the way she’s progressed and her form’s been very, very good going into Saturday’s race.
“She’s run very well in the vital lead-up races and she appears to be in good shape.
“We think that’s she’s very well weighted with 54 kilos for being an Epsom (Handicap) winner.
“So she’s run well in the right lead-up races and she’s got a great record at the Randwick mile.”
Jockey Brenton Avdulla agrees with the bookies and punters and believes Secret Admirer can get the job done from her wide draw on the weekend.
“She’s a get back horse and I’m much happier drawn out than in,” Avdulla said.
“The track looks like it might be rain-affected so out there might be the place to be.”
For her Epsom Handicap win last October, which was also her last victory, Secret Admirer jumped from barrier 16 of 17 and Avdulla had no trouble getting her home nearly two lengths clear of subsequent Cox Plate winner, the ill-fated Pinker Pinker.
“We drew barrier 17 (of 18) in the Epsom (Handicap) and she came down the outside and blew them away,” he said.
“There’s no reason why she can’t finish over the top of them again.”
Following Secret Admirer in the 2012 Doncaster Mile Odds are four other single-figure chances with:
- #2 More Joyous ($7) – Drawn in barrier 12, needs a slow track at worst to race her best, out to atone for her 11th in the Doncaster in the wet last year, comes off her sixth Group 1 victory and if it’s dry she’s the one you want. If Rain Stays Away It’s More Joyous’ Pay Day.
- #1 Rangirangdoo ($9) – One of four Chris Waller-trained chances, must cart the 58kg topweight from a wide barrier 17 draw if they are to add another Doncaster win to their record after their 2010 triumph. Better Weight and Better Draw and Rangi Could’ve Been the one to Score.
- #3 Shoot Out ($9) – Looks to be Waller’s main danger, has been in raging form for their new trainer including a Chipping Norton Stakes win two back and was far from disgraced when third in the Ranvet Stakes. Distance is Right for Shoot Out to Put Up Good Fight.
- #6 Sincero ($9) – This former Stradbroke champ hasn’t won a race since the George Main Stakes last September but they have looked threatening in their last two and get the mile for the first time this season, barrier six won’t hurt. Barrier Six Makes Sincero a Genuine Each Way Pick.
Other longer-priced chances that could prove good value come Saturday include Waterhouse’s promising colt Niagara ($11), reigning Myer Classic winner over the Flemington mile Hurtle Myrtle ($13), George Ryder runner-up last time out Rekindled Interest ($16), Queen of the Turf third placegetter King’s Rose ($17) and the Ron Quinton-trained Monton ($18).
