Master Of Design Targets 2012 Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival

Upset TJ Smith Stakes winner from last weekend, Master Of Design could be Queensland bound with their Rosehill based trainer David Payne seriously considering a trip to the sunshine state with the now Group 1 champ for the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival 2012.

TJ Smith Stakes winner Master Of Design is heading to Queensland for the 2012 Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival

Fourth-up for the season at Randwick on Derby Day, lightly-raced Redoute’s Choice six-year-old Master Of Design scored the shock win of the weekend when they got the better of Rain Affair in the TJ Smith Stakes (1200m) as a $30 roughie.

It was the stallion’s seventh turf triumph from 17 starts and a nice reward for connections who snared the original $2.1 million yearling purchase when Darley sold them off at the end of 2010 for just $200,000.

Payne could now give Master Of Design the chance to further boost their stud value with more Group glory this time in Brisbane.

“I’ll give Master Of Design a couple of easy weeks and then we’ll get him ready for Brisbane,” he said.

There were originally rumours that Master Of Design would back-up in the $400,000 Group 1 All Aged Stakes (1400m) at Randwick Saturday week on Sydney Cup Day where they would face off against undefeated Melbourne filly Atlantic Jewel who made a stunning return to the turf with an easy four length romp in the Sapphire Stakes last Saturday.

Payne, however, has ruled out the All Aged Stakes for Master Of Design not ashamed to admit being scared of the Mark Kavanagh-trained Atlantic Jewel.

“That filly is something else,” he said

“Thankfully she didn’t go for the TJ Smith.”

The appeal in Brisbane lies in the fact that Master Of Design’s TJ Smith Stakes win earned them an all-expenses paid trip to Queensland to contest the $1 million Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap (1400m) at Eagle Farm on June 9.
