Fernhill Handicap 2012 – Nominations

The 2012 Fernhill Handicap (1600m) is one of two Listed juvenile races at Royal Randwick Racecourse and stands as a key support event on the nine-race card that includes the Doncaster Mile and the ATC Oaks.

Among the 11 horses nominated for the $100,000 event are Peter Snowden-trained horses Solemn and Proverb.

Proverb has signalled plenty of potential in his young career, winning on debut at Wyong in early March and running fourth in a 15-horse field in the Group 3 Schweppervescence at Rosehill on April 7.

Dear Demi ran second in that race and the filly is one of the more experienced horses entered for Saturday’s event.

Trained by Clarry Conners, Dear Demi has scored one victory and two placings from six starts but has finished fourth on another two occasions.

Another horse to show promise is colt Honorious who will be looking to record his first victory after finishing mid-field in four starts to date.

He is joined in nominations by John Thompson pair Strength and Trophies and Paul Messara colt Rowie who is coming off a one-and-a-half length victory on debut at Randwick-Kensington on April 9.

The race stands alongside the Keith Mackay Quality as the second two-year-old event at Randwick this weekend which is set to host a bumper day of racing.

With rain expected throughout the week, there could be some surprise results in the Doncaster Mile which will see the likes of glamour mare More Joyous and 2011 Epsom winner Secret Admirer compete for the top share of $2 million.

Other highlights include the $550,000 ATC Oaks (2400m) and the Galaxy which will see some exciting sprinters battle it out over 2400 metres.
