Ocean Park Scratched From 2012 Australian Derby

Ocean Park has been withdrawn from the Group 1 Australian Derby field at Royal Randwick Racecourse today April 14, 2012.

The New Zealand galloper is believed to have been scratched due to heat in one of his joints, which has led to localised swelling.

Due to the inflammation of the joint, x-rays cannot yet be taken and Ocean Park will instead fly home on Monday night to undergo scans in New Zealand.

Ocean Park’s connections will find the injury hard to swallow, after they opted to pay the $40,000 late entry fee to enter the 2012 Australian Derby.

The Thorn Park colt was set to be partnered by jockey Glen Boss in the race, with the rider openly boasting about his chances yesterday.

With no sign Ocean Park would be scratched from the 2012 Australian Derby field, Boss praised the three-year-old for his close second to Laser Hawk in the Group 1 Rosehill Guineaslast start.

Glen Boss (pictured) was confident of Ocean Park's winning chances prior to his shock scratching from the 2012 Australian Derby.

“He was challenged at the 100-metre mark by a very good filly (Silent Achiever),” Boss said.

“She was definitely going to pass me but when he caught her out of the side of his blinker he showed all the tenacity and staying ability I look forward to riding a stayer in the Derby.”

Ocean Park was looking to gain his first Group 1 win in the 2012 Australian Derby after his impressive showing at Rosehill on March 31.

Prior to his Rosehill Guineas run, Ocean Park finished eighth in the Group 1 Randwick Guineas at Royal Randwick behind Mosheen in what was his first Australian race start.

The Gary Hennessy-trained colt has won three of his seven race starts and has earned more than $180,000 in prize money.
