Fast Clip Headed to Doncaster – Doncaster Prelude 2012 Results

Gai Waterhouse gelding Fast Clip has produced an excellent run to take top honours in the $125,000 Group 3 2012 Doncaster Prelude (1600m) at Sydney’s Royal Randwick Racecourse today.

The four-year-old hit the lead early and managed to stay there for the entire race, managing to hold on by a head at the line ahead of Speediness and Alma’s Fury.

As the field entered the straight it was clear it was going to be a two-horse showdown between Fast Clip and Speediness as the pair broke away from the pack.

They went neck and neck all the way to the line but it was the 2011 Tulloch Stakes winner who managed to just scrape home and earn himself exemption from the Doncaster ballot.

It was the third winner of the day for the first lady of racing and Waterhouse was happy after trying some alternative methods with the gelding who is prone to misbehaving.

“He’s been a bit of a whiff this horse, he’s been driving me crazy,” Waterhouse said.

“He just hasn’t quite sort of concentrated on his work.

“So I did some little exercised with him…sort of like pilates. And I can’t tell you how it has switched him on.”

Waterhouse was full of praise for Tommy Berry, a regular rider for the leading Sydney trainer.

“Didn’t Tommy ride him absolutely brilliantly, he jumped the barriers, he took control of the race right from the start,” Waterhouse said.

“It was almost over for rover from the start wasn’t it.”

Berry described the winner of six of of 19 starts as “courageous” following the last race of the day at Randwick.

“He’s going very good, it was a courageous win,” Berry said.

“This horse is tough, typical Gai Waterhouse horse.”

The prestigious $1.5 million Doncaster will take place next Saturday, April 21 at Sydney’s Royal Randwick Racecourse.
