Ethiopia Wins 2012 Australian Derby

Highly promising gelding Ethiopia has upset the favourites in the Group 1 $1.5 million Australian Derby at Royal Randwick Racecourse in Sydney today.

It was a breakthrough win for the for the Pat Carey-trained horse who had signalled his potential as a stayer when running second in the Alister Clark Stakes at Moonee Valley on March 16.

Ethiopia is the 2012 Australian Derby winner

All the money came for Silent Achiever and Laser Hawk pre-race but it was the $16.00 outsider who crossed the line in front to take top honours in the prestigious 2400 metre event.

Trainer Carey was thrilled with the result but was confident he was always good enough to challenge for victory.

“I love training these staying horses and this is one of the races you really want to win,” Carey said.

“He could be a bit special this horse. He’s very raw, if you look at him he’s that lovely big scopey sort of horse.

“He’s just a classic stayer in the making.”

The result signals a potential for a Melbourne Cup berth this spring but Carey was cautious not to get too carried away.

“Hopefully you’ve got a career that goes beyond the spring and into the future, that’s paramount to us,” Carey said.

“The spring’s very tough on four-year-olds, we see an attrition rate every year with four-year-olds.

“We don’t care how long we’ve got to wait as long as we’re happy and the horse is right in the mean time.”

Rhys McLeod rode the victor from barrier 10 and he could barely believe it after the race.

“It should sink in later on tonight a bit, it’s quite a thrill” McLeod said.

Ever-improving Tulloch Stakes winner Polish Knight ran second while pre-race favourite Laser Hawk came third.

Highly rated second favourite Silent Achiever started poorly and trailed at the back of the field for much of the race, leaving far too much work to make up as the horses entered the final straight.
