Dances On Stars Upsets Ichihara in 2012 Kindergarten Stakes

Odds-on favourite Ichihara has been upset by Gerald Ryan-trained colt Dances On Stars in the first race of the day at Randwick in the Group 3 2012 Kindergarten Stakes (1100m).

Ichihara was backed into ($1.60) prior to the race but after jumping poorly for the first time in her career, nothing went right for the Magic Night Stakes winner.

Dances On Stars and Agueda got out of the gates in far better positions and over 1100 metres were good enough to be far too difficult for Ichihara to reign in.

Corey Brown tried gallantly to find Ichihara an opening, first trying to squeeze down the rail and then trying every avenue but ultimately the horse paid for missing the start and had to settle with third.

It was the maiden victory for Dances Of Stars, who was coming off a spell after showing promise with a second and fourth last year.

Trainer Ryan said the Snitzel colt had improved a lot from last year and is now a far smarter horse.

“He’s a lot smarter this time in. He did a lot wrong as a two-year-old colt,” Ryan said.

“We threatened to geld him but we didn’t want to do that because there is not a lot of him just yet.

“Nice little horse, he’s going good.”

Experienced jockey Glyn Schofield rode Dances Of Stars to victory and he admitted he was pleased when Ichihara missed the start.

“I was quite happy to see that because that meant he was bottled up and not using his best asset which is his speed,” Schofield said.

It was the first loss of Ichihara’s career, having previously been undefeated in three starts.

The Randwick race day is just getting started, so head to to have a piece of the action.
