Adrian Knox Stakes 2012 Taken by Full Of Spirit

New Zealand filly Full Of Spirit has impressed in her first run on Australian soil, taking out the $125,000 Group 3 2012 Adrian Knox Stakes (2000m) at Royal Randwick Racecourse.

Boom young jockey James McDonald was in the saddle for the three-year-old’s first run at more than 1600 metres and both jockey and horse signalled their potential for bigger things to come.

McDonald allowed her to hang back towards the middle of the field but as they hit the straight the three-year-old showed a nice turn of speed and accelerated past the front runners down the middle of the track.

The Kiwi jockey was full of praise for the horse and was thrilled the owners had decided to bring the horse to Australia to race.

“She’s a beautiful filly, I’m thankful for the owners for bringing her over and it’s a good way to repay them,” McDonald said.

McDonald said he would be recommending to the owners that the she should run next weekend’s Oaks and predicted she would be tough to beat.

Trainer Roger James was hesitant to commit to the Oaks run but admitted today’s win had given him confidence in the horse.

“I don’t know, she’s not nominated for the Oaks but today might give us a little bit of confidence,” James said.

James said he was impressed with how Full Of Spirit had adapted to the Australian conditions and suggested she has a big future.

“All credit to this filly, she only arrived on Wednesday night at 11 o’clock and she hasn’t missed a beat since she got here”

“She’s a big physical specimen and I think it’s a nice mixture of sprinting and speed and stay as well and that’s coming to the fore.”

Graheme Begg-trained filly Plumm produced an excellent run to finish second while Secret Liaison ran third despite getting caught in a bad position early in the race.
