Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
This is it the start of the Royal Randwick Autumn Racing Carnival happens on Saturday with an excellent nine-race, all-Group program planned for 2012 Australian Derby Day, the Races.com.au best bets for the meeting listed below.
Latest Royal Randwick Track Conditions
- Rain: In the True Position
- Track Condition: Dead (4)
- Weather: Overcast
There is something for everyone at Randwick this weekend with no less than three Group 1 races, the marquee of which is of course the $1.5 million Group 1 David Jones Australian Derby (2400m) running as Race 7 at 3:35pm.
And what a cracker ATC Australian Derby 2012 has on offer with the Rosehill Guineas trifecta last time out in Laser Hawk, Ocean Park and Silent Achiever all backing up.
Will the favourites salute or can a roughie take the bikkies with the likes of the improving Strike The Stars, lightly-raced smokey Ethiopia and Tulloch Stakes champ Polish Knight and the like out in force.
Punters are treated to the first of the three elite levels earlier at 1:40pm with a small but select field of sprinters headlined by William Reid Stakes winner Foxwedge and Sydney specialist Rain Affair dominating the $1 million Group 1 Darley TJ Smith Stakes (1200m).
Following is Race 5 at 2:16pm for the two-year-olds with Golden Slipper winner Pierro looking to upset Black Caviar’s younger half-brother, the also undefeated All Too Hard in the $500,000 Group 1 ATC Inglis Sires Produce Stakes (1400m).
What else is on the cards? Plenty!
Keep an eye out for the race return of boom Thousand Guineas winning filly Atlantic Jewel who if she’s right should make a mess of her rivals in the Race 6 – the $157,000 Group 2 Sapphire Stakes (1200m) at 2:55pm.
There’s also a Golden Slipper consolation prize on offer for the unbeaten Ichihara in the first, the $125,000 Group 3 Kindergarten Stakes (1100m) getting the day underway at 11:45am, after connections chose not to pay the late entry for the Magic Night Stakes winner into the world’s richest handicap.
As always there’s plenty of talk about the horses to back, sack, take each way and include in exotics for Derby Day.
See below for our complete 2012 Australian Derby Day betting guide with trifecta tips for all nine races before you head along to our preferred bookie bookmaker.com.au to place your bets!
Race 1 – 11:45pm – Matrium Financial Services Kindergarten Stakes (1100m)
- #3 Ichihara ($1.90) from #1 Dances On Stars and #4 Agueda
Ichihara shouldn’t get beaten here. She is three from three and loves Sydney, could have been in the Golden Slipper and been competitive having won the Magic Night Stakes last time out where Golden Slipper fourth placed Doubtfilly ran fourth in.
Race 2 – 12:25pm Bacardi Together Carbine Club Stakes (1600m)
- #1 Fat Al ($2.20) from #4 Brambles and #5 Imperial Grand
Lots to like about the favourite here after their smart first-up win in the Albury Guineas over 1400m. Will love getting up in distance and while lightly-raced has seen the mile before and should be good second-up.
Race 3 – 1:04pm Patinack Farm Adrian Knox Stakes (2000m)
- #10 Scram ($21) from #2 Full Of Spirit and #1 Secret Liaison
First upset of the day and what a beauty it is with a $21 outsider! Form on the Kiwi favourite Full Of Sprit is iffy and Secret Liaison has too much weight, Scram a genuine chance for us based on their eye-catching second at Kembla Grange over the mile. They rise in class and distance but give them a go.
Race 4 – 1:40pm Darley TJ Smith Stakes (1200m)
- #Rain Affair ($2.30) from #4 Foxwedge #6 Hallowell Belle
Read why we are tipping Rain Affair to upset the favourite and score their 11th Sydney win on the trot in our 2012 TJ Smith Stakes Betting Tips. Rain Affair also continue to ease out in the price making them good value, especially if the rain comes!
Race 5 – 2:16pm Inglis Sires Produce Stakes (1400m)
- #1 Pierro ($2.45) from #2 All Too Hard and #3 Raceway
Another upset and while they’re odds are still quite short, they are better than odds-on. Why can Pierro back up from a Golden Slipper win and take out a champion-in-the-making? Find out by following the link to our detailed Inglis Sires Produce Stakes 2012 Tips.
Race 6 – 2:55pm Yellowglen Sapphire Stakes (1200m)
- #2 Atlantic Jewel ($1.45) from #3 Mid Summer Music and #1 More Strawberries
She’s back. The best three-year-old filly on the books is ready for her return and there’s little to suggest Atlantic Jewel won’t maintain that flawless record here. Kav has been patient so she should be ready to strike. Read our full 2012 Sapphire Stakes Betting Tips.
Race 7 – 3:35pm David Jones Australian Derby (2400m)
- #6 Ocean Park ($4.60) from #13 Silent Achiever and #3 Strike The Stars
Ocean Park to improve and reward Glen Boss with an upset over fellow Kiwi Silent Achiever. They are great value and have the right form and draw.
There’s quite a few we rate for the placings however so check out our comprehensive Australian Derby 2012 Tips and Predictions by following the link.
Race 8 – 4:15pm Schweppes Chairman’s Quality (2600m)
- #3 Once Were Wild ($7) from #5 Permit and #10 Anudjawun
Gai Waterhouse’s defending champ to go back-to-back and beat one of the top Sydney Cup fancies Permit. Read our 2012 Chairman’s Handicap Tips & Predictions post to read why.
Race 9 – BMW Doncaster Prelude (1600m)
- #10 Fast Clip ($7) from #12 Speediness and #15 Happy Trails
Fast Clip was wide last start in the Ajax when sixth so ignore that, fancy them to improve and Waterhouse is firing on all cylinders.
