Australian Derby 2012 Tips, Predictions & Trifecta Selection

The marquee race running at Royal Randwick in Sydney this Saturday is the time-honoured three-year-olds’ classic, the 2012 David Jones Australian Derby, the team’s insider tips and betting predictions for which are detailed below.

Strike The Stars

Strike The Stars is one of the's 2012 Australian Derby place picks

Officially kicking off the prestigious Royal Randwick Autumn Carnival, 2012 Australian Derby Day is shaping up as a cracker all Group race card headlined by the $1.5 million Group 1 David Jones Australian Derby (2400m) running as Race 7 at 3:35pm.

It is a titillating edition of the ATC Derby this year, the 13-horse field featuring plenty of talent and lots of depth.

Can the top fancy and sole filly Silent Achiever secure the NZ Derby – Aus Derby double at just her second start down under?

Silent Achiever is one of three Kiwis in this field, two under double-figures, will the NZ form stack up?

Will Gai Waterhouse and Nash Rawiller back up from their Golden Slipper success last Saturday and score their maiden Australian Derby with Rosehill Guineas winner Laser Hawk?

Is a roughie upset on the cards? And if so by who? Is it Australian Guineas runner-up Strike The Stars poised and ready to strike after smart work on the track this week? Or what about shock Tulloch Stakes winner Polish Knight, any chance again?

After doing a comprehensive Australian Derby 2012 Form Guide & Betting Preview the expert tipsters at have come up with our exclusive tips on the big one this Saturday.

Randwick Race 7 Betting – 2012 Australian Derby Tips Tip To Win

#6 Ocean Park ($4.60)

They are a market mover backed in from $5 to $4.60 to win this, and while they weren’t bought across the Tasman for this race, Kiwi visitor Ocean Park is the pick of this bunch for us.

Jockey Glen Boss, who attempts back-to-back Australian Derby wins following the success of Shamrocker last year, sticks on this Gary Hennessy-trained Thorn Park colt after guiding them to a slashing second in the Rosehill Guineas.

It was actually Boss’s recommendation to connections that got this horse in this race, now he’s got to get the job done.

We can see why too as their Guineas second was a beauty when working from the back of the pack to finish a neck off the winner.

They get an extra 400-metres here and if they handle that and if they haven’t peaked already, this is theirs.

They got the barrier with six, the top two drawn wider with Laser Hawk in 11 and Silent Achiever in 9.

And, we can’t go past the superstitious punt – Horse No. 6 in Barrier 6. Third time lucky down under fo this one.

Best Place Chances

#13 Silent Achiever ($3.40), #3 Strike The Stars ($16) and #2 Laser Hawk ($3.80)

Silent Achiever has improvement in her from the Guineas and while it is a tough test against the boys, she didn’t win the NZ Derby over this distance without having class.

Ignore the last two on paper from Strike The Stars and take a look at their flying form in trackwork this week, one that’s getting better with age.

Laser Hawk’s Guineas win was deserved, just feel they may be found out over this distance

Roughies To Try

#14 Ethiopia ($14), #9 Hoylonny ($34) and #4 Darci Be Good ($61)

Ok so they’re not that rough but Ethiopia is a lightly-raced maiden and probably needs a bit more experience to challenge for the win, but they boast a 100% Place Rate and their second in the Alister Clark last time out was promising.

Hoylonny ran a credible sixth in the Rosehill Guineas from barrier 16, they get gate 8 on Saturday which Shamrocker won from last time – this distance will suit.

Darci Be Good is very rough in the markets but worth a sneaky Place Bet. They will improve form a Rosehill Guineas 10th getting more distance, are prepared by a former Derby winning trainer in Bede Murray and are the only horse in this field with previous winning form at the track.
