Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
There is less than three dollars separating the top four chances in this Saturday’s 2012 Adrian Knox Stakes in Sydney according to the latest markets, Roger James’ Kiwi filly Full Of Spirit the narrow early favourite.
The third race on a crack nine-event Australian Derby Day card at Royal Randwick on Saturday, the $125,000 Group 3 Patinack Farm Adrian Knox Stakes (2000m) field features 10 three-year-old fillies, four of which are at single-figures in the early bookmaker.com.au odds.
Drawn nicely in barrier two with ace New Zealand jockey James McDonald engaged, Flying Spur filly Full Of Spirit sits top of the Adrian Knox Stakes odds at a quote of $3.50 as she prepares to make her Australian race debut on Saturday.
A winner of two of her eight career starts to date Full Of Spirit was last seen running away to win a Awapuni mile race by an easy three lengths, the versatile youngster stepping up to the 2000-metres for the first time on Saturday.
Of course some of the hype on Full Of Spirit in the Adrian Knox Stakes betting markets could be in relation to her star stablemate New Zealand Derby winner Silent Achievement who is the firming $3.40 favourite to win the $1.5 million Group 1 Australian Derby (2400m) on the weekend.
So is there more value laying Full Of Spirit on Saturday?
The bookies perceive her to have three main dangers with:
- #6 Plumm ($4.40) – Grahame Begg-trained Encosta De Lago filly ran fifth to Mosheen in the Group 1 Vinery Stud Stakes over this distance at Rosehill last Saturday, a short back up but she drops dramatically in class and although lightly-raced from barrier six on the 54kg minimum is a genuine chance – Each Way Me
- #1 Secret Liaison ($5) – Early market mover, this Victorian visitor ran a good second at Caulfield over 1700m seven days ago, she travels interstate and is the 59kg topweight – Don’t Back Me
- #4 Lightens ($6) – Has work to do from the far outside barrier, Kerrin McEvoy to ride, caught the eye at Randwick over 1550m last time out and has improvement in her – Place Chance
Although our gut says to stay away from Mathew Ellerton and Simon Zahra’s Artie Schiller filly Secret Liaison, her trainers suggest otherwise hoping she can return to the stakes winning form that saw her win the Listed Twilight Glow Stakes (1400m) at Sandown last November.
“She’s done it at this level before, she won that Stakes races on Sandown Guineas day,” co-trainer Zahra said.
“She has taken a while to come to hand and put her best run in the other day.
“She is just starting to find her form.
“We were pleased with the effort and now all she has to do is travel up alright and then handle that way of going.
“She hasn’t done a lot of work on the Sydney leg but she is one of those fillies who leads on that leg anyway.
“She should handle it but you never know until you put them under pressure.”
