Currently paying $7.00 to win the prestigious $1.5 million event, the Chris Waller-trained gelding ran fourth in a 800 metre trial but was fast down the final furlong, impressing jockey Hugh Bowman.

The leading Sydney rider will again be in the saddle when he lines up in the Doncaster on March 21 and he could not be happer with the horse.

“I wouldn’t want to be swapping him for any other ride in the race,” Bowman said.

Bowman said the five-year-old would be more suited to the mile after running third to the red-hot Manighar in the 2000 metre Ranvet Stakes last start.

“I think the Doncaster suits him,” he said.

“It’s a mile (race) at Randwick and his record there is brilliant.”

The three-time Group 1 winner was much-hyped leading into the Ranvet after dominating the field by two lengths in his previous start in the Chipping Norton Stakes.

Bowman said he was without luck in the Ranvet, having started from a wide barrier and getting a tough run.

“Things didn’t go his way in the Ranvet after he had all the favours in the Chipping Norton,” he said.

He currently sits third in the Doncaster Mile market behind George Ryder Stakes third place-getter and glamour mare More Joyous.

More Joyous looks the horse to beat the six-time Group 1 winner proving highly impressive in her two starts since returning from a spell with two dominant victories in the Canterbury Stakes and last weekend’s Queen Of the Turf Stakes.

It will the be the second Doncaster run for the winner of 17 of 24 starts after finishing a disappointing 11th last year.

The Doncaster Mile will be run on April 21 at Sydney’s Royal Randwick Racecourse.
