Sapphire Stakes 2012 Final Field – Atlantic Jewel to Return

Unbeaten filly Atlantic Jewel will make her much awaited return this weekend in the Group 2 2012 Sapphire Stakes at Sydney’s Royal Randwick Racecourse.

Star filly Atlantic Jewel returns this weekend in the 2012 Sapphire Stakes

The star three-year-old was also nominated for the Group 1 TJ Smith but trainer Mark Kavanagh has opted to bring her back to racing against a lesser quality field.

A daughter of Fastnet Rock, Atlantic Jewel burst on to the scene with a debut win in Geelong last August and then went on to win five straight races including the Group 1 Thousand Guineas ahead of Mosheen at Caulfield.

It will be no easy task to continue her unbeaten streak this Saturday after drawing barrier 12 in the 14-horse race that includes Gai Waterhouse-trained mare More Strawberries.

The two-time Group 2 level winner is returning from a spell and will team up with regular Waterhouse jockey Nash Rawiller when she runs from the inside.

Two horses coming into the race in good form are last-start winners Celts and Rose Of Peace.

A son of Lohnro, Celts won the Group 3 Birthday Card Stakes in only his second ever Group race while Rose Of Peace beat 14 other horses to take out the Listed Wenona Girl Handicap.

Trained by Peter Snowden, Celts has received a favourable barrier to extend his number of Group wins this weekend after drawing barrier six this morning.

Atlantic Jewel is not the only unbeaten horse named in the final field with John O’Shea-trained filly Bound To Blush undefeated from three starts.

She faces a step up on Saturday in her first Group race, having previously won lesser quality races at lower level tracks.

Mid Summer Music will be looking to bounce back from a disappointing seventh in the William Reid Stakes and is part of the highly succesful Peter Moody-Luke Nolen combination.

The six-year-old mare has a reasonable record of nine wins from 19 starts and has collected over $500,000 in prize money.
