Sabrage Not Out of 2012 Australian Derby

They are one of the outsiders in the Australian Derby 2012 odds for the big classic clash at Randwick on Saturday, but according to their Flemington-based trainer Mike Moroney last year’s Victoria Derby third placegetter Sabrage is still in with a chance.

Victoria Derby placegetter Sabrage will look to score an upset 2012 Australian Derby result on Saturday

Currently the bookmaker.com.au markets for the $1.5 million Group 1 ATC Australian Derby (2400m) are dominated by last start Rosehill Guineas winner Laser Hawk and New Zealand Derby champ Silent Achiever, who ran third in the Rosehill Guineas in her Aussie debut.

The dynamic duo are both installed at the top of the Australian Derby odds at bookmaker.com.au paying $3.60 to win and are followed by close Rosehill Guineas runner-up Ocean Park at $5.

Much further down the markets punters can then find Charge Forward colt Sabrage at a juicy price of $61 to score what would be a massive upset Australian Derby result.

Drawn in the extreme outside Australian Derby barrier (13) with Glyn Schofield to ride, Moroney’s hopeful Sabrage was third in last year’s Victoria Derby over the 2500-metres at Flemington, a run that came one after their victory in the Group 3 Norman Robinson Stakes (2000m) at Caulfield.

Despite their good form over an increased distance, their distant 11th behind Laser Hawk ($3.60 @ bookmaker.com.au) in the Rosehill Guineas (2000m) last time out has them as one of the roughies for Saturday.

Backing up from a fourth to Highly Recommended in the Group 2 Alister Clark Stakes (2040m) at Moonee Valley, Sabrage could only manage to cross six lengths away from the winner in the Guineas.

Moroney, however, is unfazed over their recent performances and knows the Group 3 winner can be competitive even from the ‘visitor’s draw’ in the Derby.

“I think he is going terrific,” Moroney said.

“The only glitch was his last run, he had problems going around the corners.

“He has been set for this race, his work has been superb and he looks terrific.”

Whether or not Moroney’s predictions of a big Australian Derby performance for Sabrage will come true will be revealed when the event runs as Royal Randwick Race 7 at 3:35pm on Saturday.
