Vaughn Sigley’s progressive three-year-old Rohan has been installed as the narrow favourite in an open betting affair for Saturday’s other Derby showdown, the WATC Derby 2012 running at Ascot in Perth.
Of the 14 youngsters engaged to face off in this year’s edition of the $400,000 Group 1 Schweppes W.A.T.C. Derby (2400m), Race 7 at Ascot at 4:15pm on Saturday, five are at single figures in the early markets at bookmaker.com.au.
Current favourite in the WATC Derby odds paying $6 is Rohan who drew favourably with barrier four, Glenn Smith to ride.
The Blackfriars colt has won three of their nine starts to date including the Listed JC Roberts Stakes (1800m) two back when they overcame barrier 13 (of 16) to beat a quality field including fellow WATC Derby rivals Flag Officer (2nd) and Rock Band (3rd).
Rohan was last seen finishing less than a length away third behind Lethal Jones and Reign Of Terror, both also running in the WATC Derby 2012, in the Listed Melvista Stakes (2200m) on March 31 when also drawn in barrier four.
The bookies are having a hard time separating the top chances in the WATC Derby betting markets.
Following Rohan on single-figures are then:
- #2 Flashy Fella ($6.50) – Michael Moroney’s Flemington visitor won narrowly over 2000m at Caulfield last start but hasn’t seen the distance, how the interstate form stacks up is always an unknown but they have the right gate (2) and plenty of support – Definite Place Chance
- #4 Lethal Jones ($6.50) – Lou & Dion Luciani’s Valixir gelding improved leaps and bounds on their JC Roberts seventh to win the Melvista over 2200m last time out and if they improve again as they get another 200m on Saturday will take some beating from gate seven – Biggest Upset Chance
- #12 Pop Culture ($6.50) – Colin Webster’s flying filly won the WA Oaks over the track and distance last time out and is looking to repeat the WA Oaks – WATC Derby double won by fellow filly Dreamaway last year, must overcome barrier 10 but Dreamaway did it from 11 so don’t discount – They Beat The Draw They Win
- #13 The Social Network ($7) – Lindsey Smith-trained Starcraft filly needs to shrug off her second place status having finished runner-up at her last three starts including behind Pop Culture in the WA Oaks, ran last Saturday over a mile which is an odd prep – Could Be Sharp Enough To Challenge
That’s not to say that some of the longer priced hopefuls in the WATC Derby field and markets are not without their chances including JC Roberts runner-up Flag Officer ($10), the Neville Parnham-trained Melvista second placegetter Reign Of Terror ($10) on the rails, Dan Morton’s Rock Band ($12) to be ridden by last year’s winning hoop William Pike, and Canny Lad filly Elite Belle ($14) out to give trainer Grant Williams successive wins.
