RN Irwin Stakes 2012 – Final Field and Barrier Draw

The 2012 RN Irwin Stakes stands as the first of two feature races at Morphetville this Saturday and a total of 11 horses were today named in the final field for the Group 3 event.

Headlining the field is Catapulted whose chances of returning from a spell with a win were dampened today when the gelding received the widest barrier draw of the field.

One of four horses running for leading Adelaide horseman Mark Kavanagh, the six-year-old has won 11 times from 28 starts including six times at Group level.

The next best of the Kavanagh contingent is Fastnet Rock gelding We’re Gonna Rock who is coming off a win last start at Morphetville on March 10.

It was the first time the five-year-old had raced in over a year but he is no stranger to Group level racing.

He finished second in the 2010 Group 1 Toorak Handicap and also ran in the 2011 Futurity Stakes.

Western Australian trainer Simon Miller is bringing five-year-old mare Power Princess East for the $115,000 event and if she can continue her recent vain of form she has a good chance of finishing at the front come business time on Saturday.

She began her 2012 campaign with a runner-up finish in the WATC Stakes and went one better in the Listed Miss Andretti Quality which she won by a length at Ascot on March 31.

First Command is another horse who has delivered some good from in 2012 and is stepping down in class after running fourth in the Group 1 Oakleigh Plate.

Prior to the Oakleigh Plate run, the Anthony Freedman gelding finished runner-up in the Group 3 Rubiton Stakes and also won the Listed Kensington Stakes.

The RN Irwin Stakes is the sixth race on the Morphetville card this weekend and is set to jump at 3:15pm (local time).

The betting markets for Morphetville will open shortly and the best odds will be found at bookmaker.com.au.
