Melbourne Cup Winner Heads Chairman’s Handicap 2012 Field

This Saturday the latest race offering a Sydney Cup ballot exemption to the winner will run at Royal Randwick on Australian Derby Day with former Melbourne Cup winner Efficient heading the field for the 2012 Chairman’s Quality Handicap.

2007 Melbourne Cup winner Efficient will carry the 59kg top weight in the 2012 Chairman's Handicap on Saturday

Set to run as Randwick Race 8 at 4:15pm, the $175,000 Group 2 Schweppes Chairman’s Quality Handicap (2600m) has this year drawn a final field of 16.

The top-rated and weighted (59kg) hopeful, who has also drawn an inside draw with gate two, is the Lloyd Williams-owned Efficient, winner of the 2007 Melbourne Cup.

A rising Zabeel nine-year-old, gallant old grey Effcient comes off a last-start fifth behind Peter Moody’s revived import Manighar in the Group 1 Australian Cup (2000m) at Flemington on March 10.

Due to be ridden by Michael Rodd for the first time since their Melbourne Cup victory nearly five years ago, Efficient amazingly makes their Sydney race debut in the Chairman’s Handicap.

The Chairman’s Handicap serves as an ideal lead-up for stayers heading towards one of the autumn’s most popular events, the $500,000 Group 1 Sydney Cup (3200m) back at Randwick on Saturday April 28.

Unsurprisingly then the Chairman’s Quality Handicap field has drawn many 2012 Sydney Cup nominees including Permit, Older Than Time and Muirfield.

Equal $5.50 second elect with 2010 Melbourne Cup winner Americian in the latest Sydney Cup odds at, the Chris Waller-trained Permit has drawn barrier 13 for the Chairman’s Quality on Saturday.

The Dansili five-year-old was last seen beating home Precedence and fellow Chairman’s Handicap rival Older Than Time in the Listed NE Manion Cup (2400m).

In-form Don Eduardo mare Older Than Time (barrier 7), fourth in last year’s Chairman’s and second in the 2011 Sydney Cup, is rated a $21 chance for the Sydney Cup this year and is one of two hopefuls for Gai Waterhouse along with defending champ Once Were Wild (barrier 9) in the Chairman’s on Saturday.

The Michael Moroney-trained Muirfield, meanwhile, comes off a good second behind Extra Zero in the Listed Albury Gold Cup (2000m) and will be ridden by Kerrin McEvoy from gate 14 on Saturday.

Other notable chances in the 2012 Schweppes Chairman’s Quality field this year include the Peter Moody-trained Hanks, last year’s runner-up Anudjawun drawn nicely in barrier three with Glen Boss to ride and the Pat Carey-trained Melbourne mare Our Serena.
