Having finally drawn a gate and having secured the riding prowess of Black Caviar’s regular rider Luke Nolen, Kembla Grange trainer Bede Murray is confident their Australian Derby 2012 hope Darci Be Good is over the odds for Saturday’s Royal Randwick classic.
Darci Brahma colt Darci Be Good, a close second to Doctor Doom in last year’s Group 1 Spring Champion Stakes at Randwick, is one of 13 three-year-olds engaged to face off in the $1.5 million Group 1 David Jones Australian Derby (2400m) this weekend.
With the equal $3.60 bookmaker.com.au favourites Laser Hawk, winner of the Rosehill Guineas last time out, and boom Kiwi filly Silent Achiever both drawing wide with barriers 11 and 9 respectively, Darci Be Good looks excellent value in gate three.
“From that good barrier he’ll just work his way where he wants to be on him,” Murray said.
“From the draw a few of the better fancied ones are going to have to work from where they’re drawn, we’ll just go back and smoke our pipe and that will be up to Luke.”
Paying a generous $61 in the latest Australian Derby betting markets at bookmaker.com.au Darci Be Good will be ridden by Nolen for the second time, the ace hoop aboard for their fifth to fellow Australian Guineas rival Polish Knight ($11 @ bookmaker.com.au) in the Group 2 Tulloch Stakes (2000m) at Rosehill last Saturday.
For the Tulloch Darci Be Good jumped from barrier eight, the youngster’s whole autumn hampered by bad gates including 13 (of 18) when 10th behind Laser Hawk in the Rosehill Guineas, and 13 (of 14) when finishing two lengths away sixth to Mosheen in the Randwick Guineas (1600m) three starts back.
“Right from last spring the Derby was his aim and I’m quite happy where we are,” Murray said.
“He was a little bit dour last week, he was grinding rather than sprinting, but when we go up to another 400 metres that’s what we need to be doing – grinding into it.
“We had a plan for the 2400 (metres) and we stuck to it. Hopefully it works out.”
Murray is also hoping to see some rain fall in Sydney ahead of Randwick Race 7 on Saturday, Darci Be Good suited to a softer track as shown by their Listed Fernhill Handicap (1600m) win at the track this time last year.
“It would be great to see a bit of rain too because we know he can handle it,” Murray said.
