Empress Rock Heads 2012 Schweppervescence Stakes Nominations

A huge nominations list of 28 horses has been named ahead of the 2012 Schweppervescence Stakes (1800m) which will take place as the second of two Group level races at Morphetville this weekend.

Otherwise known as the Auraria Stakes, the Group 3 race has a field limit of 16 horses meaning 12 horses will have to be culled before the final field is named tomorrow.

One of the top nominated horses in the three-year-old fillies’ race is Empress Rock who has been in sensational form this year.

Trained by the legendary Bart Cummings, the Fastnet Rock filly is chasing a third straight victory after winning Group 2 races the Kewney Stakes and the Sportingbet Fillies Classic.

Third place in the Kewney Stakes was taken by Bliss Street who has also been nominated for this Saturday’s feature race after failing to challenge the front runners in the Group 1 Coolmore Classic on March 24.

The Daniel Morton-trained horse will be out to score her third Group 3 win after taking top honours in last year’s WA Sires’ Produce Stakes and the 1000 Guineas Prelude.

Other horses likely to feature among the front runners in the $175,000 event are Secret Liaison and Leon Corstens-trained Rahveel.

Rahveel showed promise when finishing mid-field in the Group 1 1000 Guineas at Caulfield last October and is coming off a fourth-place effort in the Group 2 Fillies Classic at Moonee Valley.

Rahveel is one of two Mark Kavanagh-trained contenders included in the 28-horse list with the leading Adelaide trainer also nominating Fastnet Rock filly Alessandra.

Trained by Matthew Ellerton and Simon Zahra, Secret Liaison will be looking to build on her last-start effort which saw her finish runner-up in the Amelia’s Story Handicap at Caulfield last weekend.

Other horses included in nominations for the 2012 Schweppervescence Stakes are Peter Moody-trained Torah New Zealand horses Crimson Lady, Crystalised, Our Miss Jones and Unoaked.
