2012 Carbine Club Stakes Nominations

A cracker all-Group race program is set to run at Royal Randwick this Saturday for ATC Australian Derby Day, one of the lesser known events on the program but one that’s still worth a punt on being the Carbine Club Stakes 2012.

Ambidexter is the top-rated 2012 Carbine Club Stakes entry for this weekend

This year’s edition of the $125,000 Group 3 Carbine Club Stakes (1600m) has attracted 12 early entries, the top-rated of which is the Peter Snowden-trained Ambidexter who is likely to start at the top of the bookmaker.com.au markets for the feature.

The classy Commands colt has run fourth at his last three runs including behind the mighty Mosheen in the Group 1 Randwick Guineas (1600m) and most recently behind 2012 Australian Derby hopeful on Saturday Laser Hawk, beaten just over half a length, in the Group 1 Rosehill Guineas (2000m) on March 31.

Snowden could also be represented in the race by Galah who will skip the $1.5 million Group 1 Australian Derby (2400m).

The Redoute’s Choice colt won the Inglis Carbine Club Stakes over the Flemington mile last Victoria Derby Day but has been out of form this time in, most recently finishing a disappointing 14th to Laser Hawk in the Rosehill Guineas.

Colin & Cindy Alderson train the next highest rated Carbine Club Stakes nominee after Ambidexter with Snippetson three-year-old That’s The One.

Winner of the Group 3 CS Hayes Stakes (1410m) at Flemington in February, That’s The One will be out to improve on their last-start ninth in the Group 2 Phar Lap Stakes (1500m) at Rosehill.

That’s The One also ran a credible fourth to Mosheen in last month’s Group 1 Australian Guineas (1600m) in Melbourne and getting back up to the mile could be the one to beat on Saturday.

Last year Gai Waterhouse enjoyed Carbine Club Stakes success with the lightly-raced Needs Further and in 2012 she will seek another win with Fat Al.

The Al Maher three-year-old has won three of their five career starts to date resuming for 2012 with a good victory over Falklands in the Albury 3YO Guineas (1400m) on March 23.
