Western Symbol has won the Group 3 Celebrations HKJC Stakes, which was the last race on Rosehill Racecourse’s Golden Slipper Day today April 7, 2012.
The five-year-old gelding won the race ahead of Southern Skye, who finished second, and Snow Alert, who ran home for third.
Western Symbol has now won both his autumn race starts, with his first coming in the West Pennant Hills Sport Handicap at Hawkesbury on March 22, 2012.
The High Chaparral gelding has now won five of his 13 race starts and has earned more than $175,000 in prize money.
Western Symbol capped off a fantastic day for trainer Gai Waterhouse, who won the $3.5 million Golden Slipper earlier in the day with Pierro.
Jockey Tommy Berry rode Western Symbol to his 2012 Celebrations HKJC Stakes win at Rosehill today.
“(It’s) great for Gai to win the slipper now I’ve won the last for her,” Berry said.
Berry was just thrilled to be part of the Gai Waterhouse stables and one of her rising regular jockeys.
“It was a bit of a shock when she asked, but I took it with both hands,” he said.
“These are the rewards you get.
“I can’t thank her enough.”
The jockey was happy with how Western Symbol performed amongst tough company in the 2012 Celebrations HKJC Stakes.
“He had a beautiful run today,” Berry said.
“We got the right run at the right time.”
