Mosheen Wins 2012 Vinery Stud Stakes – Rosehill Race 3

Mosheen has just held on to win the Group 1 Vinery Stud Stakes at Rosehill Racecourse today April 7, 2012.

The three-year-old made it three Group 1 wins in a row with today’s victory, after winning the Group 1 Australian Guineas and Group 1 Rosehill Guineas at her last two starts.

Mosheen led by more than two and a half lengths in the early stages of the race and was asked to quicken at the 600 metre mark.

The race looked won until the 50 metre mark when second place-getter Streama made a late dash for the line but was unable to beat home the rising superstar that is Mosheen.

Trainer Robert Smerdon was impressed with Mosheen’s gutsy run.

“She can quicken and has a really good turn of foot,” Smerdon said.

“But I thought the second filly (Streama) was very good.”

Smerdon was not willing to let on whether Mosheen would make another autumn appearance in the AJC Australian Oaks on April 21, 2012, or the Group 1 Australian Derby next Saturday.

“We’re going to take the time we’ve got to think about that,” he said.

“We’ve got to think about the future.”

However, jockey Danny Nikolic was quick to recommend Mosheen continue on to an Australian Derby or AJC Oaks instead of being put back in the paddock.

“She should be going around in the Oaks or the Derby,” Nikolic said.

“It all depends on barriers where she ends up.”

Nikolic couldn’t say enough about the Fastnet Rock filly, with whom he’s had a long association with.

“She’s a true professional. I love her,” he said.

“She’s a ripper.

“She switched off beautifully.

“When she got a furlong and a half she just put her head down and started to breathe really well”

Co-owner Phil Sly was also ecstatic with another Group 1 win from the versatile filly.

“Great thrill, it was part of the plan,” Sly said.

“(Nikolic has) done the right thing by the horse.”

Mosheen has now won eight of her 15 race starts and earned more than $2.87 million in prize money.
