George Ryder Stakes 2012 Winner Is Metal Bender – Results

The 2012 George Ryder Stakes has been won by Metal Bender at Rosehill Racecourse today.

Metal Bender won the 2012 George Ryder Stakes by the smallest of margins ahead of Rekindled Interest, who placed second, and Secret Admirer, who finished third.

The six-year-old gelding was having his second-up start for the autumn after having a year off due to a bleeding indecent during the Group 2 Apollo Stakes in March, 2011.

Trainer Chris Waller was full of emotion after the 2012 George Ryder Stakes was run and won.

“It’s just an amazing performance,” Waller said.

“To get these old horses back…it’s a big effort for a horse (that’s been) off a long time.

“He’s a bleeder and he’s had tenderness and you can’t get many more problems than that.

“It’s amazing to be a part of it.”

Waller was also proud of the run by Rangirangdoo, who finished in the first half of the field.

“He went super,” Waller said.

“(He) looked the winner 200 out.

“He showed that he’s still there and his legs have never been better.”

Waller is now looking to run Metal Bender at Randwick in two weeks’ time, in either the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes or Group 1 All Aged Stakes.

“I originally thought it might be a bit short for him today and maybe the Queen Elizabeth (would be his next start),” he said.

“Maybe a 1,400 (metre) like the All Aged might be better.”

Michael Rodd was the jockey who piloted Metal Bender to his 2012 George Ryder Stakes win.

“I just sort of kept to the script of last time,” Rodd said.

“I could see things were happening.

“It was just green lights everywhere he went.

“It’s amazing. It’s great to be here riding Group 1 winners.

“A lot of credit goes to Chris Waller.

“These old horses aren’t easy to train.

“He’s lovely to ride in the race… and he tries his heart out for you.”
