Flying Snitzel has won the first race of today’s Golden Slipper Day, holding off Dear Demi to win the 2012 The Schweppervescence at Rosehill Racecourse.

The two-year-old filly finally has a Stakes race to her name after constantly performing against tough fields this autumn racing carnival.

Flying Snitzel won the 2012 The Schweppervescence by half a length in front of second place-getter Dear Demi, with Strength rounding out the placings in third.

Trainer Gerald Ryan was sure of the result before the race had even run.

“I had a lot of confidence in her,” Ryan said.

Flying Snitzel did not get the easiest run of the race, and had to work hard from her three-wide position.

“She was forced to cover ground,” Ryan said.

“Admittedly she had cover.

“Class prevailed down to the line.”

The trainer will now take Flying Snitzel to the Group 1 Champagne Stakes at Royal Randwick Racecourse, where she will face off against the boys over 1,600 metres.

“Right from last year when she started I said she was a 1,400-1,600 metres horse,” he said.

“The champagne has always been her aim.

“She’ll be easy to maintain because she’s just a straight forward race horse.”

Jockey Hugh Bowman piloted Flying Snitzel to today’s 2012 The Schweppervescence victory.

“It really was a dawdle early on and she settled beautifully,” Bowman said.

“She was strong on the line.

“You’re going to get a lot more from this filly.”

Bowman is confident that Flying Snitzel is suited to a race like the Group 1 Champagne Stakes on April 28, 2012.

“I think she’d be very competitive in a race like that,” he said.

“She’d be a definite place chance.”

Flying Snitzel has now won two of her five race starts and earned more than $130,000 in prize money.
