Open Market in 2012 Easter Cup

The Group 3 2012 Easter Cup (2000m) stands as one of two feature races on the eight-race Easter Saturday card at Caulfield and betting is currently fairly open for the stayer’s event.

Only current favourite Folding Gear ($4.60) is under $5.00 and a total of six horses are paying $13.00 or under.

Top weight Shewan ($8.00) will carry 60kg into the race and if he is to achieve victory it will be the first time any horse has done so since 1969.

The five-year-old former Group 2 winner ran well to finish fourth in the 1400 metre Mt Dandenong Handicap first up two weeks ago and should produce an improved effort at a distance more to his liking.

Trained by Robert Smerdon, Shewan has five wins from 17 starts and three of those have come at distances of 2000 metres or more.

The in-form contender in the 15-horse field is Dance With Her who is currently paying $9.00 at the preferred bookmaker

A winner of nine of 34 starts, the five-year-old mare is chasing a third consecutive victory after winning the Yalumba Golden Mile at Bendigo and the Pakenham Cup last start on March 25.

He is joined by Peter Moody-trained gelding King Diamond at $9.00 who is coming off a third-place finish in the Albury Cup while last-start winner Over Quota is currently at $12.00.

Over Quota has been in excellent form in 2012, winning four of six starts including the Listed Kilmore Cup on February 26.

The six-year-old gelding will have to handle a step up in distance if he is to continue his impressive recent run, having never raced above 1800 metres before.

Rounding out the top end of the betting market are Lucky Eighty Eight and My Bentley who are both currently paying $13.00.

My Bentley finished runner-up in the Kilmore Cup but will need to improve upon his last start which saw him finishing a disappointing tenth in the Yalumba Golden Mile.

Lucky Eighty Eight will also need to improve after so far proving unimpressive in 2012 with finishes of seventh and tenth in two starts this year.
