Niagara Tops George Ryder Stakes Odds 2012

In a tight betting market for the last Group 1 race of Golden Slipper Day this Easter Saturday, Gai Waterhouse’s flying young colt Niagara has opened the narrow favourite to win the 2012 George Ryder Stakes.

Ajax Stakes winner Niagara is the early 2012 George Ryder Stakes favourite

Due to jump at 4:35pm as Rosehill Race 8 on Saturday, the $400,000 Group 1 George Ryder Stakes (1500m) features a classy field of 17 hopefuls.

Of those 17 there are just two three-year-olds taking on the open-age field with the Peter Moody-trained Huegill and Waterhouse’s Encosta De Lago colt Niagara.

As it turns out the two youngsters sit at complete opposite ends of the George Ryder Stakes betting markets at with Huegill the $201 roughie and Niagara the current $5.50 favourite.

Drawn out wide in barrier 16 Tommy Berry and Niagara have work to do on Saturday if they are to salute for the punters but it seems the bookies think they have a Group 1 win in them as does Waterhouse.

“A hard ask but I think he is up to it,” Waterhouse said of Niagara taking on weight-for-age company for the first time.

Having just their 10th career start Niagara has only been in one elite level field before when there finished a distant 13th to Sangster when failing their distance test in  last year’s Victoria Derby over 2500m at Flemington.

Showing their skill over a shorter distance last Saturday Niagara scored a bit three and a half length win in the Group 2 Ajax Stakes run over the George Ryder Stakes track and distance.

They are on a short back-up but Waterhouse is confident it will suit as Niagara looks to stake their claims for the $2 million Group 1 Doncaster Mile (1600m) at Randwick on April 21.

Following Niagara in the 2012 George Ryder Stakes Odds are then four other single-figure chances with:

  • #1 King Mufhasa ($6.50 – Talented New Zealander won the Toorka Handicap down under during the spring and came back this autumn to win the Futurity Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield on Blue Diamond Day
  • #2 Rangirangdoo ($7.50 – Defending George Ryder Stakes winner and market mover to go back-to-back, Chris Waller’s veteran is in-form and improving coming off a Chipping Norton fourth and a Ranvet Stakes second, drop back in distance a query
  • #6 Love Conquers All ($7.50 – Ran second to Rangi last year in this race, Rosehill suits and they should improve from their close first-up fifth to More Joyous in the Canterbury Stakes over 1300m
  • #15 Secret Admirer ($9 – Grahame Begg-trained mare winner of the Epsom last spring, looked in good form close to peaking with a Coolmore Classic second over this track and distance on March 24

Other longer priced contenders in these early markets that could prove an excellent value bet then include the likes of Roger James’ last-start Newcastle Newmarket Handicap winner He’s Remarkable ($13), Canterbury Stakes runner-up Monton ($14), Cox Plate – Mackinnon Stakes third placed Rekindled Interest ($21) and even Oakleigh Plate winner Woorim ($26).
