French star Manighar will be looking to post a third consecutive victory when he goes head to head with race favourite Americian in the 2012 BMW this Saturday at Sydney’s Rosehill Gardens.
The six-year-old gelding has been in tremendous form this year and was too good for Americain in his Australian Cup win before going on to win the Group 1 Ranvet two weeks later.
The 2400 metre BMW is 400 metres longer than both those races and is the major test as to whether he can make it three in a row this weekend.
Last time Manighar raced Americain at the distance, the former Melbourne Cup winner was too good for his French rival by half a length but leading trainer Peter Moody thinks it will be different this time around.
“The last time they met at a mile and a half (2400m), Americain beat Manighar…I dare say Manighar is probably in a better vain of form,” Moody said.
Moody has been targeting Manighar for the prestigious $2.25 million race all year and believes he can continue his sizzling run of form this weekend.
“I’m happy with my bloke [Manighar], I can’t say anything on the other bloke [Americain],” Moody said.
“My fella hasn’t gone backwards…very pleased.”
With Sydney’s fine weather set to continue into the weekend, conditions should be more suited to Manighar as Americain prefers softer tracks.
With the track firming and an outside barrier draw confirmed for Americain, the favourite has moved out to $2.15 (bookmaker.com.au) after opening at $1.90 earlier this week.
Manighar has shortened from $4.20 to $4.00 while third-favourite Southern Speed is the market mover and is currently paying $8.50.
Last year’s Caulfield Cup winner was paying $10.00 when markets opened and with reasonable form this year remains a chance of upsetting the front runners.
The Southern Image mare ran second to Black Caviar in the CF Orr Stakes in early February and was a close runner-up to Manighar in the Australian Cup on March 10.
The BMW is the fifth race on the Rosehill Card this Saturday and is set to jump at 2:25pm.
