Golden Slipper Betting 2012 by Barrier Draw – Form Preview

There are lots of ways to pick a winner and the winner every punter wants to back this Saturday is the 2012 Golden Slipper winner, so below the Races.com.au team have an exclusive Golden Slipper betting by barrier draw preview.

Pierro

Pierro has drawn the most successful Golden Slipper barrier in history with gate one

It is important to consider everything and anything when placing your horse racing bets from the race form guide, betting history, breeding, track records, horse statistics, jockeys, trainers and of course the all-important barriers.

While good horses can overcome bad gates there is little doubt that barriers play an important role in the chances of a galloper in any race, especially the two-year-olds engaged in Saturday’s $3.5 million Group 1 Golden Slipper (1200m) at Rosehill Gardens this weekend.

Dedicated to providing our readers all the best Golden Slipper betting previews and guides, we’ve studied the history and this year’s Golden Slipper barrier draw to come up with the best horses to back according to the gate stats.

2012 Golden Slipper Barriers & Betting

Barrier 1 – #1 Pierro ($6 bookmaker.com.au)

  • Number of Golden Slipper Winners: 8
  • Most Recent Golden Slipper Winner: Crystal Lily (2010)

Barrier one has produced the most number of Golden Slipper winners of any gate in history, and this will come as a boost for Gai Waterhouse as she seeks her fourth Golden Slipper win with five horses, the shortest-priced of which is this in-form Lonhro colt on the rails.

And for the superstitious punters, horse No. 1 in barrier one is a sign too obvious to ignore

Barrier 2 – #4 Amorino ($67 bookmaker.com.au)

  • Number of Golden Slipper Winners: 2
  • Most Recent Golden Slipper Winner: Dance Hero (2004)

Snitzel colt Amorino has lots of improvement to make form their fourth to Pierro in the Todman Stakes if they are to be the first winner from barrier two since Waterhouse’s second in 2004.

Barrier 3 – #10 No Looking Back ($9 bookmaker.com.au)

  • Number of Golden Slipper Winners: 6
  • Most Recent Golden Slipper Winner: Catbird (1999)

Following barrier one gate three is the most successful of the Golden Slipper barriers, Waterhouse having secured both starting positions with her Blue Diamond Stakes runner-up No Looking Back making a return on Saturday.

Barrier 4 – #2 Epaulette ($7 bookmaker.com.au)

  • Number of Golden Slipper Winners: 5
  • Most Recent Golden Slipper Winner: Century Miss (1979)

By the numbers this gate is successful, but no horse has jumped from five and won since 1979. Can Epaulette be the next and hand Peter Snowden back-to-back wins following the success of Sepoy 12 months ago?

Barrier 5 – #14 Cavalry Rose ($26 bookmaker.com.au)

  • Number of Golden Slipper Winners: 4
  • Most Recent Golden Slipper Winner: Sebring (2008)

Waterhouse’s last jumped from barrier four, can Gerald Ryan’s first? This smart filly could be the smokey in the field with the Black Opal and Magic Night Stakes form yet to be revealed.

Barrier 6 – #15 Doubtfilly ($81 bookmaker.com.au)

  • Number of Golden Slipper Winners: 3
  • Most Recent Golden Slipper Winner: Stratum (2005)

Queensland filly is a real roughie but worth a sneaky look after she won three on the trot back home before her Sydney debut to finish fourth in the Magic Night Stakes. She improves on that she’s in this race.

Barrier 7 – #13 Snitzerland ($26 bookmaker.com.au)

  • Number of Golden Slipper Winners: 2
  • Most Recent Golden Slipper Winner: Miss Finland (2006)

Not one of the better gates to be in, but Snitzerland isn’t without her chances with jockey Corey Brown hopeful of improvement after her fourth to Samaready in the Reisling.

Barrier 8 – #11 Driefontein ($15 bookmaker.com.au)

  • Number of Golden Slipper Winners: 5
  • Most Recent Golden Slipper Winner: Bounding Away (1986)

Another Waterhouse runner looking to break a lengthy time between wins for a gate. Barrier 8 has produced five winners, none since 1986, and undefeated filly Driefontein would surprise only a few if she became the sixth on Saturday.

Barrier 9 – #3 Raceway ($15 bookmaker.com.au)

  • Number of Golden Slipper Winners: 3
  • Most Recent Golden Slipper Winner: Sweet Embrace (1967)

It has been a long time between drinks for barrier nine, over four decades actually. Will Raceway change that on Saturday?

Barrier 10 – #16 Later Gator ($71 bookmaker.com.au)

  • Number of Golden Slipper Winners: 5
  • Most Recent Golden Slipper Winner: Danzero (1994)

Five winners from barrier 10 say this double-digit gate isn’t a bad place to start. Unfortunately this horse doesn’t look the right one from Waterhouse to back here. Only just snuck into the field and are likely to finish at the back of it.

Barrier 11 – #9 Samaready ($2.60 bookmaker.com.au)

  • Number of Golden Slipper Winners: 3
  • Most Recent Golden Slipper Winner: Ha Ha (2001)

Waterhouse won her first Golden Slipper from this gate and this year the favourite lines up in it. Samaready has the class and form to win, she just needs to do a ‘Ha Ha’ and overcome the double-digits.

Barrier 12 – #7 Narcissus ($31 bookmaker.com.au)

  • Number of Golden Slipper Winners: 2
  • Most Recent Golden Slipper Winner: Inspired (1984)

Only two winners and none since ’84, Narcissus is also no Sepoy so can’t see Snowden’s second coming from this one.

Barrier 13 – #5 Faustus ($101 bookmaker.com.au)

  • Number of Golden Slipper Winners: 0
  • Most Recent Golden Slipper Winner:

The Golden Slipper barrier no one wants to draw. Barrier 13 has never produced a Golden Slipper winner, the only gate where this is the case, and it is fitting the 2012 field’s $101 roughie is in it.

Barrier 14 – #6 Ashokan ($26 bookmaker.com.au)

  • Number of Golden Slipper Winners: 4
  • Most Recent Golden Slipper Winner: Polar Success (2003)

Ashokan is this Saturday’s Golden Slipper betting market mover with the punters smashing them from $61 to $26. Barrier wise no qualms here according to history, but it is still a wide gate for a youngster in a top field to overcome. They do that they are a top three chance for us.

Barrier 15 – #8 Shelford ($81 bookmaker.com.au)

  • Number of Golden Slipper Winners: 1
  • Most Recent Golden Slipper Winner: Star Watch (1988)

John O’Shea had zero luck with the Golden Slipper barriers with his three chances drawing 13 – 15. Shelford was a chance, a rough one, until they came up with this horror draw.

Barrier 16 – #12 Jade Marauder ($17 bookmaker.com.au)

  • Number of Golden Slipper Winners: 1
  • Most Recent Golden Slipper Winner: Phelan Ready (2009)

Chris Waller’s hopes of a Golden Slipper win were dashed when his smart filly came up with the ‘visitor’s draw’. Still, Phelan Ready was a roughie when they gave the gate it’s maiden win only a few years back. Can history repeat itself?
