Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
Robert Smerdon’s superlative filly Mosheen has unsurprisingly opened as the odds-on favourite to post her fourth Group 1 victory in Saturday’s Vinery Stud Stakes 2012, the three-year-old fillies’ clash one of five elite levels highlighting the Golden Slipper Day race card.
Last year’s Crown Oaks winner by nine lengths, Fastnet Rock filly Mosheen hasn’t put a hoof wrong this autumn and she goes into the $400,000 Group 1 Vinery Stud Stakes (2000m), also known as the Storm Queen Stakes, on the back of two Group 1 wins over the boys.
After an easy three length success in the Australian Guineas (1600m) at Flemington Mosheen was last seen hanging on to defeat Said Com in the Randwick Guineas (1600m).
A run the Sydney way of going under her belt and having overcome horror draws for both of her big wins, Saturday’s race back against her own kind should be a breeze for Mosheen.
In the latest Vinery Stud Stakes odds at bookmaker.com.au Mosheen’s price reflects her chances and she is at $1.50 and firming.
The only one of her seven rivals at single-figures to score an upset Vinery Stud Stakes result on Easter Saturday is Streama at a quote of $2.90.
With Mosheen out wide in seven Streama and jockey Hugh Bowman are tipped to get a beautiful run from barrier three, the Guy Walter-trained Stratum filly also a Group 1 winner in last year’s Flight Stakes over the Randwick mile.
Streama looked in for a big autumn with a Group 2 win in the Surround Stakes at Warwick Farm two back, but looked to be found out when finishing three lengths away fifth in the Group 1 Coolmore Classic (1500m) at Rosehill on March 24.
She is yet to see 2000-metres and needs to improve, but it seems Walter and the bookies believe she is a chance.
All the other Vinery Stud Stakes hopefuls can be found at $26 or above in the bookmaker.com.au markets including Walter’s other runner Appearance ($26), the daughter of Command earning her shot at the big time after a close victory in the Group 3 Keith F Nolan Classic (1600m) at Kembla Grange last time out.
The other $26 chance is then Keith F Nolan runner-up, Anthony Cummings’ Canberra Guineas winner She Goes To Rio.
