2012 Golden Slipper Tips, Predictions & Selections

This Saturday the big event that the racing fans and punters are eagerly awaiting is the lucrative two-year-olds classic, the Golden Slipper 2012, and the must-read Golden Slipper tips, predictions and selections from the Races.com.au team are right here.

No Looking Back and Driefontein

No Looking Back (outside) is one of the Races.com.au team's best 2012 Golden Slipper place bets

Shaping up to be a genuine thriller from the season’s hottest crop of two-year-olds, the $3.5 million Group 1 AAMI Golden Slipper (1200), is due to run as Rosehill Gardens Race 7 at 3:50pm and the field is full with 16 hopefuls ready to go.

Easing favourite in the Golden Slipper odds at bookmaker.com.au and one of the eight fillies engaged is Mick Price’s Blue Diamond Stakes winner Samaready.

Despite being undefeated in four having put three lengths on an open field in the Blue Diamond two back before taking out the Resiling Stakes at Rosehill last start, Samaready is drifting in the Golden Slipper betting markets from $2.50 to $2.65.

With so many smart two-year-olds engaged, most of which Samaready hasn’t faced before, and from an awkward barrier 11 draw it is easy to see why punters are looking for value in the Slipper markets outside of the favourite.

It really is a crack Golden Slipper field this year full of livewire chances including five for Gai Waterhouse as she looks for Slipper number four, and for us the best way to bet is not with your heart but by the form.

Earlier in the week the expert form team at Races.com.au did the work on this race and went over every fact and stat to provide our readers with the Golden Slipper 2012 Form Guide & Betting Preview, and based on what we uncovered there we have formulated the below tips for the big Easter Saturday clash.

Rosehill Race 7 Betting – 2012 Golden Slipper Tips

Races.com.au Tip To Win

#2 Epaulette ($7.50 @ bookmaker.com.au)

They are one of the top three fancies and we can see why, Races.com.au tipping Epaulette to explode from their ideal barrier four draw to hand trainer Peter Snowden and jockey Kerrin McEvoy successive Slippers following the win by Sepoy 12 months ago.

While Epaulette is no Sepoy, they are a promising two-year-old that looks ready to peak for this grand final.

They’re not undefeated but they do boast an excellent winning percentage of 66.67%, have won one from two at Rosehill and are just one of four in this field to have won at the track and distance.

Loved their Todman Stakes second when just missed it to Pierro, same race Sepoy suffered his first defeat in before backing up to beat them home in the Golden Slipper. History to repeat itself.

Best Place Bets

#10 No Looking Back ($9), #9 Samaready ($2.65) and #1 Pierro ($6) – Bet now at bookmaker.com.au

Boring to tip all the single-figure chances in the race, but this is what the form is telling us and we aren’t arguing with logic.

No Looking Back is definitely the forgotten horse in the race. Should have won the Magic Millions but lost on an iffy protest. Then her second in the Blue Diamond, while three lengths off Samaready, was a great effort as she came from well back to run home strong. She’s been off a while but Gai knows how to trainer a Golden Slipper winner and she says she’s fit.

Samaready is talented without doubt, you don’t win a Blue Diamond and your opening four without class, but she will have to peak twice from a bad gate and there are others here that are also full of ability.

Plenty to like about Waterhouse’s shortest hope Pierro, another unbeaten two-year-old. They are a winner at the track and distance and have barrier one, the most successful gate in the race’s history having produced eight Golden Slipper winners to date.

Roughie To Try

#14 Cavalry Rose ($26 @ bookmaker.com.au)

Really rate this Gerald Ryan-trained filly. She was fourth in the Black Opal behind Epaulette two back after getting a knock then improved to come within a short head of Ichihara in the Group 2 Magi Night Stakes at the Golden Slipper track and distance.

The Magic Night Stakes form is yet to make itself clear, could be Cavalry Rose and the fourth placed Dobutfilly who is at $81 to win the Golden Slipper come out and upset the lot.

Cavalry Rose also has a commanding Rosehill record with two wins and a second from three attempts and over the distance she has won twice and run second once from four starts, these are good stats and those are good odds.
