Betting for the 2018 Group 1 $700,000 Altus...
A top class field of middle distance sprinters will take to the Caulfield track this Easter Saturday for the popular 2012 Victoria Handicap, the field for which has now been released.
One of two Group race highlighting the Easter Saturday action in Melbourne along with the aptly named 2012 Easter Cup, the $125,000 Group 3 Victoria Handicap (1400m) is set to run as Caulfield Race 6 at 3:27pm.
A full field of 16 starters plus one emergency has been paid up for in the Victoria Handicap this year with the Hawkes-trained former Hong Kong galloper Happy Zero to lead the field out at the 60kg topweight in the number one saddlecloth.
There are five last-start winners engaged for the Victoria Handicap this year, including Mick Price’s emergency runner Shelia’s Star.
If the four-year-old Snitzel mare gains a start she most certainly looks competitive on paper.
Shelia’s Star has won her last two starts firstly at Sale over 1419m by an impressive four lengths, and then most recently by three and a half lengths at the Victoria Handicap track and distance.
Price will also saddle-up Fastnet Rock five-year-old Faster Son who suffered a blow drawing the extreme outside gate in the Victoria Handicap barrier draw (17).
The former Trevor Bailey-trained horse improved on their distant 11th at Moonee Valley two starts back when beaten over 38 lengths to win a 1300-metres feature at Bendigo last start on March 17.
The two other most notable last start winners in the race are the Anthony Freedman-trained Smokin’ Joey drawn to perfection in gate five, and Stephen Mckee’s New Zealand visitor Eight Schillings coming up trumps with barrier four.
Rejuvenated Encosta De Lago four-year-old Smokin’ Joey hadn’t won a race since his successful debut in the 2010 Sapphire Stakes until February this year when he put three lengths on a decent field over 1400m at Sandown.
He then went on to win his last start as well in a close finish with Pago Rock in the Listed Super Saturday Stakes (1400m) at Flemington on March 10.
Eight Schillings, meanwhile, is also looking to extend a winning streak as they come off three straight back home in New Zealand.
Saturday will be the highly-rated O’Reilly gelding’s first run down under, and their first run over 1400m since November last year.
Other notable chances in the 2012 Victoria Handicap include defending champion Red Colossus with work to do from a horror barrier 16 draw, the Tony Vasil-trained Group 3 winner Under The Eiffel also drawn poorly in gate 15, David Hayes’ in-form six-year-old Shock Value (barrier eight), Peter Snowden’s Lonhro mare Quidnunc (barrier nine) coming off a good second in the Wenona Girl Handicap at Randwick, and last year’s Group 2 Crystal Mile winner Testa My Patience
Testa My Patience is the third runner for trainer Mick Price in the race will be ridden by Glen Boss on Saturday, just the second time since 1993 that Boss hasn’t been in Sydney riding on Golden Slipper Day the hoop having missed the 1998 meeting.
Don’t miss out on the elite racing action of Easter Saturday in Melbourne and Sydney, where Golden Slipper Day takes centre stage!
