Ever-improving mare Ofcourseican will be out to continue her excellent recent form in this weekend’s Group 1 2012 Queen Of The Turf Stakes at Sydney’s RosehillGardens.
The five-year-old has also been nominated for the George Ryder Stakes but if trainer Rod Quinton gets his way, the last-start winner will run against her own sex in the Queen Of The Turf Stakes.
“I’m hopeful that her owner agrees with me that she should run in the fillies and mares race,” Quinton said.
“It’s not going to end up a huge field where the other race looks like being a big field, a capacity field.”
Ofcourseican has been in sensational form in 2012, beginning with a third-place finish in the Triscay Stakes before going on to win the Liverpool City Cup and the Group 1 Coolmore Classic.
The Coolmore victory came on March 24 but Quinton believes she will have no problems with the 14-day turnaround this weekend, describing her as a “tough mare.”
“I couldn’t believe how well she came through the race a couple of days after the Coolmore,” Quinton said.
To win The Queen Of The Turf Stakes will be no easy feat with quality horses More Joyous, Pinker Pinker and Secret Admirer also included in nominations.
Gai Waterhouse-trained mare More Joyous returned impressively from a spell on March 24 with victory in the Canterbury Stakes and will be the horse to beat on Saturday.
The five-year-old has a highly successful career record of 16 wins from 23 starts, including five wins at Group 1 level.
Cox Plate winner Pinker Pinker began the year well with a second-place effort in the Futurity Stakes but will be looking to bounce back after finishing a disappointing sixth in her last start in the Chipping Norton Stakes.
The Queen Of The Turf Stakes is run over 1500 metres and is one of five Group 1 races on a bumper Rosehill card this Saturday that includes the prestigious Golden Slipper.
