Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
Exciting gelding Iggi Pop will contest his first ever Group race in the 2012 Tulloch Stakes at Rosehill this Saturday which takes place as part of a bumper Golden Slipper Day card.
The inexperienced runner of just three races earned a start in the $175,000 race after recording back-to-back victories in lower level races at Newcastle and Randwick.
Trained by well-know Sydney horseman John O’Shea, Iggi Pop will be having his first ever run at 2000 metres when he lines up against 11 other colts and geldings in the three-year-old race.
O’Shea is confident the New Zealand horse can handle the step up in class after performing admirably to win by more than a length at Randwick on the weekend.
“I’m excited by him,” O’Shea said.
“The Frank Packer Plate at the end of the Sydney carnival would also be a nice race.”
A son of Savabeel, Iggi Pop will be ridden by talented New Zealand jockey James McDonald from the outside barrier (12) in what is the fourth race on the Rosehill card this Saturday.
Also set to run in the 2012 Tulloch Stakes is Darci Be Good, who will appreciate a drop back in class following two tough hit outs in the Group 1 Randwick and Rosehill Guineas.
A winner of three of 11 starts, the Bede Murray-trained colt showed promise when finshing sixth in the Randwick Guineas but was unable to improve on that result and finished tenth last weekend at Rosehill.
He is likely to be joined by Lohnro colt Benfica at the top of the market when betting opens shortly and the Peter Snowden-trained horse has the perfect barrier (5) to turn around his recent poor run of form.
Benfica won the Group 1 TJ Smith at Eagle Farm last year but in three 2012 starts has not been able to finish better than seventh.
Other horses set to run in the Tulloch Stakes this weekend include Isopach and Gai Waterhouse trio Strawberry Boy, Compass and Satirical Boy.
Betting will be open shortly for all the Rosehill action with markets on the BMW and Golden Slipper already available at bookmaker.com.au.
