Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
Former Melbourne Cup winner Americain will head into this weekend’s feature $2.25 million 2012 BMW (2400m) as favourite despite yesterday drawing the outside barrier (10).
The seven-year-old is currently a short-priced favourite ($1.90) at bookmaker.com.au, despite running third to Manighar in the Australian Cup in his last start.
His strong race favouritism comes on the back of his tremendous record of 11 wins from 29 starts as well as a step up in distance, with the BMW 400 metres longer than the Australian Cup.
It is a distance that the star import has won at three times before but it will be no easy feat to topple Manighar who is in excellent form.
The $4.20 bookmaker.com.au second favourite heads into the race chasing a remarkable third consecutive Group 1 victory.
Trained by Peter Moody, Manighar has been targeted for this race all year and has made many in the racing world pay attention after recording an Australian Cup-Ranvet Stakes double.
Also on the French gelding’s side is the barrier draw as he will run from the plum barrier six position with regular jockey Luke Nolen in the saddle.
There is a large gap in the betting behind the top two chances with Australian Cup runner-up Southern Speed the next best at $10.00.
The 2011 Caulfield Cup winner is one of two local horses in a field dominated by international horses, with the other Niwot ($18.00) who is fresh off a fourth-place effort in the Ranvet Stakes.
After Southern Speed, two New Zealand horses occupy the next best market positions with the Bart Cummings-trained Precedence ($13.00) and four-year-old mare Scarlett Lady ($15.00).
Scarlett Lady has a successful record of eight wins from 15 starts but only two of those have come on Australian soil with the Group 1 Queensland Oaks and the Group 3 Roses at Doomben.
Former Melbourne Cup winner Efficient is one for the value-chasers at $21.00 while Irish gelding Hawk Island is the long-shot outsider at $81.00.
