A wide barrier 11 of 16 draw hasn’t stopped Samaready sitting number one in the Golden Slipper 2012 odds for this Easter Saturday clash at Rosehill, the Mick Price-trained filly still favoured to repeat the feat of Sepoy from last autumn and win the Blue Diamond – Golden Slipper double.
The premier juvenile’s race in the world, the $3.5 million Group 1 AAMI Golden Slipper (1200m) runs as the headline act at Rosehill Gardens on Saturday, Samaready favourite to win.
After coming up with gate 11 in today’s Golden Slipper barrier draw Samaready eased out slightly at our preferred online bookmaker bookmaker.com.au from $2.50 to $2.60.
Price, however, said that from that gate his unbeaten daughter of More Than Ready could still get into a winning position and race away with career success number five.
“We wanted between eight and 12 so we have to be happy with that,” Price said.
“She should be able to stay out of trouble, it’s fine.”
Three other horses are at single-figures in the Golden Slipper betting markets at bookmaker.com.au, the trio all drawn well for Saturday with:
- #1 Pierro ($6 bookmaker.com.au) – Best-backed of Gai Waterhouse’s five chances, unbeaten Lonhro colt comes off back-to-back Group 2 wins at Rosehill including a win over Epaulette in the Todman Stakes on March 24, Nash Rawiller to ride from barrier one – will the inside draw suit?
- #2 Epaulette ($6.50 bookmaker.com.au) – Peter Snowden-trained Commands colt coming off a close second in the Todman, poised to strike from barrier four with Kerrin McEvoy in the saddle, McEvoy rode last year’s Golden Slipper winner Sepoy to victory
- #10 No Looking Back ($8.50 bookmaker.com.au) – Another of the well fancied Waterhouse contingent, a very nice Redoute’s Choice filly who lost the Magic Millions Classic upon protest to stablemate before her Blue Diamond Stakes second, if she runs second again in the Golden Slipper from her perfect barrier three draw she would be the first horse in history to do so in all three races
Two more of Waterhouse’s clan then occupy the next lines of betting with Magic Millions Classic winner Driefontein ($14) who Waterhouse describes as rearing to go, and the tough and consistent Raceway ($15).
The Chris Waller-trained Jade Marauder remains under $20 in the markets at a quote of $17 despite coming up with the ‘visitor’s draw’, the extreme outside barrier 16.
Winner of the Group 3 Sweet Embrace Stakes (1200m) at Randwick last time out on March 17, Jade Marauder and jockey Glyn Schofield certainly have work to do on Saturday if they are to hand Waller his first Golden Slipper trophy.
“It’s certainly the Olympic games of horse racing in terms of the young horses,” Waller said of the Golden Slipper.
“There’s plenty of good ones to follow so we’ll just have to take our pick.
“Samaready looks the pick to follow.
“Can’t worry about barrier draws, every horse will need some luck in the race.
“It’ll be a strong tempo and one that will suit this horse (Jade Marauder).”
