Neville Sellwood Stakes Nominations – 2012 Golden Slipper Day

One of the lower-key races on Rosehill’s bumper Golden Slipper Day this Saturday will be the 2012 Neville Sellwood Stakes, nominations for which were taken on Monday.

Zavite & Descarado

Zavite (Inside) is the 59kg topweight of the 2012 Neville Sellwood Stakes nominations

This year’s edition of the $125,000 Group 3 Neville Sellwood Stakes (2000m), formerly known as the Queen’s Cup, has attracted 20 early entries the highest-rated of which is Anthony Cummings’ 59kg topweight Zavite.

Upset winner of last year’s Ranvet Stakes as a $101 roughie, the veteran Zabeel nine-year-old has failed to do anything of note since and was last seen beating home just one other runner when defending their Ranvet Stakes title at Rosehill on March 24.

Following Zavite in the Neville Sellwood Stakes weights and ballot is then the David Hayes-trained Extra Zero who comes off a win in the Listed Albury Gold Cup (2000m) from March 23.

There are five other last-start winners among the Neville Sellwood Stakes nominations including Craig Carmody’s Sky High Stakes champ Single who will be out for their fourth on the trot if accepted, the Gai Waterhouse-trained duo of Western Symbol and Charing Cross, and the Peter Nestor-trained country cups champ Izababe.

Zariz six-year-old from Dubbo Izababe claimed a good win in the Wellington Cup (1700m) last time out when carrying a hefty 62kg, adding to their Moree, Coonabarabran, Dubbo and Bengalla Cup wins, the horse to relish coming back to 54kg on Saturday.

Twelve months ago Chris Waller prepared the Neville Sellwood Stakes winner Syreon, who is now prepared by Matthew Williams, as well as runner-up Beijing Boy.

This year Waller will attempt back-to-back wins having nominated last year’s second placed Beijing Boy, Red Ransom six-year-old Snow Alert and Sky High Stakes fourth placed Brayroan.

Other notable 2012 Neville Sellwood Stakes entries include Ron Quinton’s in-form Starcraft mare Crafty Irna coming off a good second to Fibrillation in the Group 3 Epona Stakes (1900m) at the track last Saturday, and the Neville Parnham-trained WA Raider God Has Spoken.

The Golden Slipper Day race fields will be released on Wednesday, aside from the day’s two marquee events the Golden Slipper and The BMW which are out shortly.
