Extra Zero and Shewan Top Easter Cup 2012 Nominations

While all the hype in the racing world this week will be about the bumper Group 1 events at Rosehill, there is still quality racing in other parts of the country including the Group 3 2012 Easter Cup (2000m) at Caulfield.

Topping the 26-horse nominations list are Extra Zero and Shewan who both would need to equal a weight carrying record to take victory in the $125,000 event.

Yesterday the two stayers were allocated 60kg, a weight that has not been carried to victory in the Easter Cup since Future achieved the feat in 1969.

One thing that won’t be a problem for Extra Zero is form or distance as the David Hayes-trained gelding is coming off an excellent victory from the outside barrier over 2000 metres in the Albury Cup.

The Albury Cup win could prove a good preclude with last year’s winner Paddy O’Reilly going on to take top honours in the Easter Cup.

The Robert Smerdon-trained Shewan is a winner at the distance and also took out the Group 2 Herbert Power Power Stakes over 2400 metres last October.

A winner of five of 17 starts, the gelding will be running in his second start of the year after finishing fourth in his first-up race at Caulfield on March 24.

Fresh off a win in the Hanley Mile, Over Quota is another quality gelding nominated for the Caulfield feature event.

The six-year-old has not won at any distance over 1700 metres but trainer Mark Webb is confident he will step up after winning last weekend following a three-week break.

“He’s been up a while but he’s just trained on super,” he said.

“Every now and again I give him three weeks between runs and he just seems to thrive on it.”

Another in-form horse nominated for the Easter Cup is five-year-old mare Dance With Her, who has produced some impressive results in 2012.

She won the Yalumba Golden Mile at Bendigo on March 17 and backed up eight days later to take top hpnours over 1750 metres in the Pakenham Cup.

The Easter Cup is one of two feature events in Melbourne this weekend with the other being the Group 3 Victoria Handicap.
