This year’s Vinery Stud Stakes 2012 field at Rosehill’s Golden Slipper Day on Saturday will feature no more than seven three-year-old fillies, something that will work in the favour of Streama according to her trainer Guy Walter.
Brilliant Australian Guineas – Randwick Guineas double winner Mosheen will likely start odds-on favourite at bookmaker.com.au for the $400,000 Group 1 Vinery Stud Stakes (2000m) on the weekend, but Walter is confident his hopeful Streama will give her a run for her money.
The daughter of Stratum was last seen running three lengths away fifth behind Ofcourseican in the Group 1 Coolmore Classic (1500m) at Rosehill, before which Streama won the Group 2 Surround Stakes (1400m) at Warwick Farm.
Six and a half length winner of the Group 1 Flight Stakes (1600m) at Randwick last October, Walter is hopeful that with a small field on Saturday Streama can return to her Group 1 winning form as she goes to the 2000-metres for the first time.
“This is the right time and the right race to test Streama over 2000 metres,” Walter said.
“But she is up against a great filly and I have a tremendous respect for Mosheen.
“She’s (Mosheen’s) beaten the males at her past two starts. She ran second in a Golden Slipper and then she won an Oaks easily.
“But I’d like to think Streama can relax over 2000 metres and she gives the impression she will.”
Following the Vinery Stud Stakes on Saturday Walter plans to take Streama to the $550,000 Group 1 ATC Australian Oaks (2400m) at Royal Randwick on April 21 so long as she shows she will handle the distance.
“Streama is entered for the Oaks and if she shows she can get the distance then there’s no reason why she won’t go there,” he said.
The ATC Oaks is also a possibility for Mosheen however her trainer Robert Smerdon has indicated that Saturday may be her final race in Australia before heading off overseas.
In the latest Australian Oaks odds at bookmaker.com.au Mosheen is the $2.60 favourite while Streama occupies the third line of betting at a quote of $7.50.
The Vinery Stud Stakes field and barrier draw will be announced on Wednesday and published right here at Races.com.au.
