A capacity field of sixteen fillies will line up...
Gai Waterhouse’s five-time Group 1 winning glamor mare More Joyous will seek her sixth elite level title and back-to-back Golden Slipper Day victories when she defends her title in the 2012 Queen Of The Turf Stakes at Rosehill this Saturday.
The More Than Ready five-year-old resumed after a five month spell to win the Group 2 Canterbury Stakes (1300m) at Rosehill on March 24, and on Saturday she returns to the track seeking successive victories in the $400,000 Group 1 Queen Of The Turf Stakes (1500m).
Having drawn 13 fillies and mares at nomination stage this year, the Queen Of The Turf Stakes was won by More Joyous 12 months ago who was also then coming off a Canterbury Stakes win.
More Joyous went on to finish a disappointing 11th in the 2011 Doncaster Mile, the $2 million Randwick feature again on the agenda for her this autumn.
A quality Queen Of The Turf Stakes field is on the cards if the nominations are anything to go by with plenty of talent to take on the reigning champ.
The Queen Of The Turf Stakes 2012 could also be host to a rematch of the Coolmore Classic with the winning trifecta all nominated for the feature with winner Ofcourseican, the second placed Secret Admirer and Peter Moody’s third placegetter King’s Rose.
All three also feature in the nominations for one of Saturday’s other features, the $400,000 Group 1 George Ryder Stakes (1500m), Grahame Begg already indicating Secret Admirer would skip the Queen Of The Turf in favour of the open-sex event.
Other big name entries include Cox Plate hero Pinker Pinker out to improve on her Chipping Norton Stakes, triple Group 1 winner Yosei who was far from disgraced when fourth in the Coolmore, the Chris Waller-trained Mille Fox Stakes winner Red Tracer and last year’s Myer Classic victor Hurtle Myrtle.
Yosei and Hurtle Myrtle are also dually nominated for the George Ryder Stakes and Queen Of The Turf Stakes, both races serving as lead-ups to the 2012 Doncaster Mile on April 21.
The best-backed of the Queen Of The Turf Stakes nominees in the latest Doncaster Mile odds at bookmaker.com.au are $8 equal favourite King’s Rose, Secret Admirer ($9) and More Joyous ($11).
The 2012 Queen Of The Turf Stakes final field and barrier draw will be out on Wednesday and published right here at Races.com.au.
