Laser Hawk Wins 2012 Rosehill Guineas

Gai Waterhouse-trained horse Laser Hawk has beaten a star-studded line up of three-year-old horses to take top honours in the feature 2012 Rosehill Guineas in Sydney today.

Laser Hawk is the 2012 Rosehill Guineas winner

Today’s Group 1 victory was particularly impressive considering it was just the fifth start for the highly promising stayer.

He built nicely upon his third place-finish in the Randwick Guineas and must now be considered a genuine contender for the prized Australian Derby.

Laser Hawk jumped out hard early but was strong enough to sit near the front of the field for the entire 2000 metres.

He was followed past the post by New Zealand horses Ocean Park and the much-hyped Silent Achiever who was disadvantaged by a wide barrier 14 start.

Hugh Bowman rode Silent Achiever well to bring him from the back of the field at the straight but Laser Hawk proved too strong at the business end of the race.

First lady of racing Gai Waterhouse was ecstatic after the race for the horse that now has four wins from five starts.

“He’s outstanding, that’s what he is. This is a really star-studded field here today,” Waterhouse said.

Waterhouse said she was expecting an even better performance in the Australian Derby which will take place over 2400 metres on April 14.

Nash Rawiller was on top last start in the Randwick Guineas and he was again the rider today, picking up his 39th Group 1 win as a jockey.

Rawiller was singing the praises of the Laser Hawk training team post-race, saying they had done a tremendous job to bring the horse up to Group 1 level.

“It’s taken him along time to get to this stage, it’s just a magnificent effort by all the staff,” Rawiller said.

“It’s taken a long time for the penny to drop but he’s always shown this potential.”

Rawiller said he was confident the gelding could again improve and would not be worried by extra distance in the Australian Derby.
