Easy win for Niagara in 2012 Ajax Stakes

Promising colt Niagara has pushed his claims as a Doncaster contender with an emphatic victory in today’s Group 2 $175,000 2012 Ajax Stakes (1500m) at Sydney’s Rosehill Gardens.

The three-year-old showed why he was the favourite for today’s race, going on to take victory by three lengths ahead of Star Of Octagonal and Alma’s Fury.

A beneficiary of the Gai WaterhouseTommy Berry combination, Niagara rushed to the lead early and was happy to set the pace for the majority of the race.

With 350 metres to go, Berry let him loose and from that moment on he was running his own race as he quickly opened up a massive gap on the field.

The dominant victory had all at Rosehill championing his Doncaster chances but trainer Waterhouse remained coy, saying a decision would be made in the next week.

One man who is hoping Niagara will run in the Doncaster is Tommy Berry, who said he would be pestering Waterhouse all week to gain the ride.

“He’s just starting to switch on a bit, I think the penny’s starting to drop,” Berry said.

“My next question is asking if I can ride him [in the Doncaster].”

Waterhouse was singing the three-year-old’s praises after the race, suggesting he still has some improvement left in him.

“I’ve always had a great opinion of this colt,” Waterhouse said.

“He’s got a physique to die for and he just jumped and said see you later.

“He’s still not quite furnished, he’s particularly furnished. Whatever he runs [next] he’ll be hard to beat.”

Niagara showed improvement on his last start where he finished second to Nobby Snip in the Eskimo Prince Stakes and he now has two wins from nine starts.
