Celts Wins 2012 Birthday Card Stakes in Photo

Peter Snowden-trained mare Celts has won the Group 3 2012 Birthday Card Stakes in an exciting photo finish to round out the bumper day of racing at Rosehill Gardens today.

A daughter of Lohnro, the four-year-old sprinted home to win by a nose ahead of Next The Universe and Divorces.

Today’s win served as the first ever Group victory for Celts who now has four wins from 16 starts.

With Peter Snowden on duty in Dubai with star colts Sepoy and Helmet, foreman Brad Widdup was at Rosehill today and was very pleased with the four-year-old’s effort.

“It was a good effort, she raced pretty handy,” Widdup said.

“She dug deep, that’s her. She tries her heart out and that was a good effort.”

With her first Group victory now out of the way, Widdup said they would look to continue to build through the grades.

Jockey Christian Reith was on riding the mare for the first time today and was relieved to have scored victory for his stable.

“We’ve been having a little bit of a lean trot the stable over the past couple of weeks but we always have confidence in the horses,” Reith said.

“She’s been going well at home so it was good to see her do that.”

Celts had to fend off a highly competitive finish from the field and Reith credited the honest mare for being able to hold on.

“We knew she was fit, we just had to get that little bit of break on them and we were able to do that,” Reith said.

” [There is] a good class of fillies of mares here, so she’s done well.”

The Rosehill race day may be finished but there is still plenty of horse racing action this weekend including tonight’s Dubai World Cup.

The $10 million race features super star So You Think who is currently favourite at bookmaker.com.au.
