Talented filly Alezan Thunder sits as a short-priced favourite for the 2012 Marsh Breeders Stakes but she may not even run at Adelaide’s Morphetville track this weekend.
Trained by Mark Kavanagh, the Magic Millions third-place getter is also entered for the Group 2 Karrakatta Plate at Ascot but has so far experienced difficulties in getting a flight to the nation’s west.
The Karrakatta Plate remains the preferred option but if she does run in Adelaide’s only Group race this weekend, recent form suggests she is likely to be among the front runners.
Currently paying $2.40, Alezan Thunder backed up her third in the Magic Millions behind Driefontein and No Looking Back to finish runner-up in her last start in the Listed Pewsey Vale Stakes.
Second in the betting is Road Trippin ($3.50), who will run from the inside barrier and has also produced some impressive results of late.
The talented gelding finished runner-up to Golden Slipper fancy Snitzerland in the Inglis Premier at Mornington before running third to the much-hyped All Too Hard and Pronto Pronto in the Group 2 VRC Sires’ Produce Stakes.
A gap exists in the market behind the two favourites and of the nine horses in the field only Family Portrait ($6.50) and Underestimation ($8.00) are under $10.00.
Family Portrait finished third behind Alezan Thunder in the Pewsey Vale Stakes last start while Underestimation is fresh off a win in the Listed St Albans Stakes at Moonee Valley.
Another horse coming off a victory is Mark Kavanagh trained filly Tormented ($11.00) who was impressive on debut when she won the Hindmarsh Plumbing Handicap at Morphetville on March 10.
Some value can be found with Daytona Grey ($16.00) and Big Chill ($17.00) who both recorded victories last start at country tracks.
The Marsh Breeders Stakes is the feature race at Morphetville this Saturday and will test some highly talented two-year-old horses over 1200 metres.
