Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
Randwick trainer Grahame Begg has said his progressive filly Kyria would have to win by an impressive margin in Saturday’s Magic Night Stakes at Rosehill to warrant her going onto the coveted 2012 Golden Slipper the following weekend.
The picture for the $3.5 million Group 1 AAMI Golden Slipper (1200m) will become clearer following Saturday’s Rosehill racing action with both the Magic Night Stakes and Pago Pago Stakes offering a ballot exemption into the Slipper for the winner.
In the $175,000 Group 2 Magic Night Stakes (1200m) Begg will saddle up his maiden Encosta De Lago filly Kyria, the youngster drawn wide in barrier 11 (of 14).
Kyria has raced solely in black-type company over her three start career to date.
She debuted with a fifth to Hussousa, who has now been ruled out of the 2012 Golden Slipper on Easter Saturday, in the Listed Gimcrack Stakes (1000m) at Randwick last October.
This season she resumed with a good first-up third behind Gai Waterhouse’s Golden Slipper-bound colt Pierro in the Group 2 Silver Slipper Stakes (1100m) on a Heavy (9) Rosehill track.
In her best run yet, Kyria comes off a close third behind winner Jade Marauder and runner-up Valerio, also racing in the Magic Night Stakes on Saturday, in the Group 3 Sweet Embrace Stakes (1200m).
“Her first three runs have all been on rain-affected tracks and she has run well every time,” Begg said.
“I was very happy with her run the other day, the last 50 metres was the best part of her race, she was really starting to get warmed up.”
Begg has also said that with a firm track in the Dead range Kyria would be able to race at her best.
“She has progressed well between runs and worked strongly this week,” he said.
“I’d love to get her on a dry track.
“This a good race, it’s no mug’s race.
“Kyria’s drawn out a bit but that probably won’t hurt her.
“It will be nice to see her get to the outside of horses.”
While nominated for the world’s richest juveniles’ race, Kyria a $51 roughie in the futures Golden Slipper odds at bookmaker.com.au, Begg is reluctant to confirm that even with a win on Saturday she’ll be accepted.
“She would want to win and win pretty impressively to go into the Golden Slipper,” Begg said.
Kyria is rated a $10 chance in the Magic Night Stakes odds at bookmaker.com.au for Saturday, markets led by Anthony Cummings’ lightly raced She’s A Fox at $3.30.
Another smart filly in the Magic Night Stakes 2012 that is unlikely to go into the 2012 Golden Slipper field Saturday week even with a win tomorrow is Ichihara.
The unbeaten daughter of General Nediym is not currently nominated for the Golden Slipper, connections expressing reservations about paying the hefty $150,000 late entry fee on Monday should she win the Magic Night Stakes.
“She’s not nominated for the Slipper,” owner breeder George Altomonte said.
“We could pay a late entry I suppose (but) I’m pretty reluctant to do that.
“But I’ll keep my options open. We won’t close the door on any options at this stage.
“We will see what she does on Saturday.”
Paying $8 to win the Magic Night Stakes, the Allan Denham-trained Ichihara has the full support of jockey Corey Brown who rides them for the first time on Saturday.
